so here it goes;

sometimes when (according to my task manager) not one
program is running on my computer (virusscan and suchlike
things are all disabled) my harddisk is busy a fuck with god
knows what..
this HDD light on my computer is constantly on or flickering
and i hear my harddisk is busy,
what the hell kind of nonsense is this? is this normal or am
i doomed?

thx in advance

I was going to put that in my post, but decided not to. You
really are psychic! Or just some stupid tit asking a
ridiculous question which begged ridicule.

Cast your mind back, have you ever enabled the feature
whereby it scans the HD during idle time to list the file
structure to speed up searches?

I enabled it on mine and could never find it to disable it
and since I reinstalled xp (for a different reason :) I've
just never enabled it now.

Ah found it- I'm too good to you morton...

Search, Change preferences (bottom of left hand menu), "with
indexing service" (second one down) read about it/disable it
there.

HAHAHA! it does...

anyways, i think Ceri JC was mentioning defrag? You should
set that up as a sheduled task every sun night or so.
(whenever you can spare the downtime from dling tunes or
porn).

Also, make sure you're not talking about the "applications
(?)" view in your task manager. Try checking the processes
tab, or the performance tab even. I'm sure you can figure
things out from there.

no not defrag, i have cancelled all schedules there, i start
that manually now and then, it's something else he meant i
think.
and i did check the different tabs in the task manager :)
thanks for the advice though

Do you have Word/Office installed? It could be the file
indexing service, as Ceri suggested. See what's in the
startup folder too, as that might be running something in
the background.

Do you only have a limited amount of RAM on your computer
(<256MB) because if you do it is probably just the pagefile
being sorted out and nothing to worry about.
