Super Mario Bros 3 - Time attack! (a video)
Check it out! Amazing stuff (this guy is really great)!
If you want to stream it in WMP:
http://www.tolu.edu.hel.fi/~hc/omgwtfsmb3.wmv
If you want to download it (17 MB):
http://www.tolu.edu.hel.fi/~hc/
If you want to download the videofile (3kb zipped):

and to answer your questions:
1) no I do not know how to play .fmv-files... they are related to the famtasia-emulator I guess, but I am (for some reason?) unable to play it in there...
2) yes, If I had the money, I would employ this guy as "gameplayer", he should be payed to play!

He is waaay too good at it. Some of the footage looks a bit weird, like if it was manipulated. Either that or it's a bootleg copy or something. Some of it looks a little off.

yeah... but it's real allright...
check out the fmv file (if you know how to use it - and if you do; tell me about it!)...
I think it's like a recorded movie of the emulator... But then if it's done on the emulator, who knows how he did it? I mean he could e.g. be playing at a really low speed.
now I will be nude for a while... listening to VNV nation and taking a shower (while nude).

A couple of observations:
Whilst his showboating on the forced scrolling (extra live gathering antics using time to kill while waiting for it to scroll) levels are impressive, he takes a lot of unneccessary risks. I'm not sure you would bother in a serious record attempt...
I didn't knpow you could build up your "P meter" as normal mario and then use it when you got the leaf- I thought you had to build it up again. I'll check this on my actual NES next time I get it out.
The jerky "off" movement in places is proabably due to it being run on an emulator. Even if it seems perfect, play a game on a real nes right after it and you spot the difference (Amusingly pocket Nes for the GBA is, aside from the slightly iffy graphics, the most accurate nes emulator I've used- even more so than the PC ones!)
I was about to criticise him for getting 3 stars at the end of levels (slight slowdown for fireworks) however, he overan just enough and got a mushroom as the third one- this guy knows all the tricks!

hmmm the PWING as it is named in the game can only be used once and you when you do use it before you enter the level you have a "P" suit on..... this isnt the case in THIS game we are seeing. WTF

No, I was refering to the meter that you build up by running- not the powerup you get a couple of times that you
have to use on the map screen. The way he achieves a similair effect with the normal leaf powerup is by running constantly.
The facts it's done on an emulator does make me think it might be each level done perfectly (seperately) and then just combined. It is possible he did it the way you see it,
but as I said, you'd probably not risk it with all the showboating he did on the scrolling levels.
Also, he was very "lucky" crossing those 6 boxes on the
final world (the ones the hand can appear on and pulls you into a level). I've never crossed that without being caught
on at least one. This coupled with his showboating is what makes me suspicious... he'd have to play through the game up
to that point dozens of time to be lucky enough to cross without getting pulled in (unless, as is with the fireworks
in SMB1, it's not actually random and it can be "read" based
on the timer etc.). If you were lucky enough to get that far
without making a mistake and the game let you through, you probably wouldn't do anything risky for the rest of the attempt...

And with all this surgical precision, it kind of makes me wonder whether Nintendo DESIGNED the game and layed out the obstacles and enemies in a way that they meant it to be possible to dominate it so thoroughly. Everything is right where it needs to be. That's not faked. He's schooling those pirahna plants. He's the fucking daddy.

I can beat super mario brothers 2 in under 16 minutes and have found some improvements since that. It can probably be done under 15 and maybe 14 barely. But that game is a lot easier than smb3 (imo). This video is mind blowing, especially the jumping on all the canonballs for one ups. jeez this guy is good.

After a lot of dicking about with various verisons patching, downloading software and whatnot I've finally got a working copy of super mario brother 3 (super mario advance) on my GBA (aside from the nes emulated version ;). I was really worried they'd mess up the play mechanics somehow, but they've done a great job... lovely graphics too whilst retaining the sharp definition of the original.
Get a copy!

the game follows strict pattern movements of enemies. thats why when you play, they move the same way each time. its all preset.
if you know the time/place of everything just off the top of your head, you could do what this player did. so its definitely doable in my eyes.
the hardest part to me, is deciding you want to take so much fucking time out of your life to do something like that, and going about doing it.
thats the most insane thing to me.

i strongly feel that this guy was using the save state function between lvls...especially the 6 boxes that grab you... he jsut flew across them the first time...do you actually think that he was like:
"shit they grabbed me!' then reset the WHOLE FUCKING GAME, start over and get a decent time?
dont; think so.
At first i thiought that MAYBE he wrote a program that played the game perfectly, but there's a little bit to much "fun" going on. ie, the jump+shoot techniques.
also i STRONGLY believe that he edited the "pipe warp" level sequences. Yeha, MAYBE he knows how to do them SO PERFECTALLY every time...but i highly doubt it.
i highly doubt this is 100% legit played through. My main argument being his fly by night passing of the 6 boxes...yeah fucking right.

Yes, the voices which I always associate with mario 64 sound out of place on the GBA in 2d games...
Nicer interface on it with things like the map screen, the controls feel more responsive. I'll have to set up my nes and compare the two to be more specific, but I really like the gba version.
Nanotech:
Yep, those concerns at the back of my mind are what stop me from being absolutely blown away by it... if it was a video of the guy doing it on a real nes with a Twin Galaxies referee there it would be awesome.

I'm pretty sure he's using save states as the amount of skills needed to do that is just... not human. I didn't know half of the techniques he was using and I swear I peeled my thumbs at this game in my time.

Have you seen that new game similar to DDR where you drum? It's got two drumsticks on chords on the machine and 5 pads and a kick drum pedal. Good idea, but hard to play with other music going on in the background and also the pads required you to hit them really hard... the machine said it was the only one in europe so I'm assuming it was japanese in origin.

yeah, that's called "drum mania" and it's compatible with "guitar freaks." So one guy can be the drummer, and one can be the guitarist.
drum mania is cool though, it's killed ddr as japan knows it. i think what turned off the japanese is that when you start kicking ass at ddr you get all sweaty. especially if you're decent enough to beat tons of others.
there's other "music sims" out there in the japanese arcades...but drum mania is the most popular.
