XP gurus, help!

My user profile in XP Pro got corrupted or something. Every
time I boot up, it lets me use a temporary profile, which
doesn't save any settings (wallpapers etc.) so it's like
using someone else's box.

Ok, so I poked around in the XP Help section, the profile
copying stuff, and it said something about changing
username.dat to username.man.

Alright, so I did that and got my profile back, but in a
messed shape. My IE favs are mixed differently now etc.

My question is: What exactly does this .dat to .man change
do? Is it possible to repair my profile?

This all started after I installed a USB Bluetooth dongle
and a USB digital camera.

Thanks.

Seems I got my profile back, but there are some display
problems. Some things are weird still, I get the "Upptäck
(Discover) Windows XP" pop-up in the tray everytime I start
up.

thanks

isn't easier to copy the important data such as favs and
just create a new account?

and i am a computer guru, i would do it that way

I think that's what I have done, except I did it into my old
profile, somehow. The UserName.dat to UserName.man change
brought my profile back. After several reboots, it seems
it's here to stay.

I suspect the .dat -> .man just copied over the stuff onto
itself. Seems to work. Now I just need to re-install my
Nvidia drivers. I get a weird error "Nvcpl.dll could not be
read. Wrong memory access (my translation from Swedish). The
file is there.

Whatever, I'm reformatting my C:\ as soon as everything
important is backed up. My avatars and so on..
