after watching princess mononoke for the fifth or sixth
time, i've come to the conclusion that this mans films are
up there with kurosawas as the best that cinema, japanese or
otherwise, has to offer. anyone agree? disagree?
the fact that its animation just solidifies my opinion of
these movies.

the sad thing is that because its animated it won't catch on
worldwide as being as great as it is. people need to open up
a bit more to animated movies as not simply being "cartoons"
or hyper violent anime.

On par with Kurosawa? I must investigate...

the combined output of the two main directors in studio
ghibli (miyazaki and takahata) easily rivals any hollywood
studios entire back catalogue of movies.

they are definately sophisticated animated films.

i loved Sprited Away and i'm set to get another one since i
have this kicking coupon.....either Kiki's Delivery Service,
and/or Castle in the Sky

i'm not sure if these could be considered childrens films
tho.....i think they are too scary for wee tots.

perhaps. i went to see spirited away among an audience of
primarily children, and instead of scaring them it seemed to
bore the majority of them. lots of moving around and
restlessness during the more tranquil moments. but thats to
be expected from an audience weaned on disney musical
numbers.
i agree that some of them might be a bit weird, not sure how
scary they are though.

ehhehe

my nieces must be wimps =0).....they are a bit sheltered.
they were kinda freaked at the blood from the flying dragon
(in spirited away) and i was kinda surprised to see all that
blood as well.....it's just not what you expect to see in
DISNEY style movies....

themes just seemed above a certain age range.....i think
they are geared toward an adult or more sophisticated
audience....

yeah, thats definitely true about themes. they do seem more
aimed at an adult audience who can look back on their
childhood.
my neighbor totoro is probably his only movie that could
really be called a kids movie.

yeah that could be... I think kiki's delivery service and
castle in the sky are probably more like real childrens
movies though, from what I've heard. I just wish they would
release a real version of Nausicaa in English, not some
shitty, butchered version that is missing half the plot.

they are actually probably going to do that since the
original rights the stupid studio owned to it ran out in
1995 and returned to miyazaki. i know its getting released
on dvd sometime soon, but thats through disney so who knows
what they'll do.

i like both the more adult oriented animated films and the
kid ones (when done well) i doubt i'll ever outgrow movies
that make you laugh, wonder, etc....anyway you look at
it.....they are great!

Kiki's is a nice story but definitely more aimed at
children. I'd go for Laputa, Castle in the Sky next.

My favorite is Princess Mononoke and then Totoro, which I
get to watch a lot with my daughter these days. :-)

cool thanks for the heads up.....i wasn't sure which to
get......i have to pick ONE.....i'll go for Castle first!

i have not heard of Totoro, guess i'll have to look that bad
boy up on IMDB

A little word of warning about Totoro - avoid the current
American version. Try and find the Japanese or Chinese version on eBay
instead. These versions are widescreen and have better
English dubs.

I have the Chinese version and even though it is region 3,
it plays fine on a region 1 US player.

whaley! i got and watched Castle in Ze
Sky......wowoowowowow

it was fantastic, and now i have another 2 dollar coupon and
i'm gonna get KiKi's next.......Miyazaki has the most
WONDERFUL imagination, it's nothing like whats coming out of
the Disney studios, and thank goodness......HIGHLY
recommended for everyone!

Yes, I have to agree with you it doesn't get much better
than Hayao Miyazaki. All of his films are really
something....and your right it's a shame these films don't
catch on because they're animated. You'd think they would
get more attention especially after Roger Ebert always
recommends them.

It may not be Miyazaki, but Ebert swears upon 'The Grave of
Fireflies' being one of the best war movies ever, though
I've yet to check it out.

Who knows though....Miyazaki films might be catching on
soon, when 'Spirited Away' was released on DVD, BestBuy had
some big promotion for it....so maybe it's getting there.

ohhhhhh you're gonna LOVE it, and it's a double disc......i
didn't realize till i opened the package.

the music is wonderful! i listened to SOME of the original
japanese track music and it was good, but honestly i like
the music that was remastered for the english version.

i'm gonna watch the bonus features later today!

i wanna get ALL HIS movies....=0)

most moving films i've ever seen, animated or otherwise.

Grave of the Fireflies... ehhhh

I have never seen a movie that made me want to end my life
until then. Yeah sure, it's moving, but not in a good
way IMO. TOOO depressing. I felt ill after watching.

Yes, I've heard it's VERY depressing.....but that's not bad
for me. I like that kind of stuff, perhaps it'll get me
thinking...I need to buy this asap.
