i don't know if anybody here is into this sort of thing.
but...well. that's what this post is for. just curious who's
read it and what you thought of them. i just got through
with 'the amber spyglass' this afternoon and was just blown
away. everything about it was just amazing. the writing, to
the story, to the characters, content. everything. just
brilliant. i'm actually going to have to give them another
read-through, i liked them so much. and i feel there's a lot
more i could get out of them another time through.

and for those of you who haven't read, and don't know what
i'm talking about...i'm refering to 'the golden compass',
'the subtle knife', and 'the amber spyglass'. by phillip
pullman. read them. wonderful books. i won't really try and
explain them, because i'm horrible at explaining things, and
i really just wouldn't even do it justice.

heheh, yeah, hard to explain. it's a really interesting
parallel dimension thing idea. I read the first two books,
got the third a long time ago but never read it. They were
good when I was younger

I've read them - and obviously so has Pantalimon :) I
really liked the first book, the second was pretty good, the
third... well it was ambitious, but it wasn't quite as
enjoyable as the other two. Glad I read them though.
Apparently they're set on making them into movies, possibly
starring Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe as the parents...
decent casting choices, I thought.

I just finished the first book, although it was called
Northern Lights.

Not bad. I think I shall have to check out the others. What
a bad idea a film about it would be though. Russel Crowe?

Easily filmable, give it a decent director like Gillam and
no problem. Crowe's not my favourite actor but I can see him
as Lord Azriel or whatever's the guy's name was.

Some of my favourite books. Absolutely love them. Much
prefer them to Harry Potter and even Lord of the Rings, to
be honest (as they've been called a cross between the
two)... the films'll be very interesting, certainly,
although I'm not so sure how good they'll be.
And yeah, in the UK the first book's called Northern Lights.

I've just finished The Northern lights and I'm now reading
the amber spy glass. Very good books, much better
"literature" than Harry Potter and the story is good to
boot.

and yes, i suppose i should've called it by the UK name,
seeing as that's what you lot would be seeing and such. oh
well. stinking america and it's alternate titles. anyways,
this pleases me. we all have something in common now. yay.
any takers on garth nix? sabriel? eh?

Did you know Pullman has a follow up short story called
'Lyra's Oxford' out? And also that he has a fully fledged
sequel called 'The Book Of Dust' planned? Check out some fan
sites (none of which existed when I finished the trilogy)
for info.

yeah i heard about the sequel, should be good. I've seen
Lyra's Oxford in the shops, not sure if its worth getting
though.

I wonder how long it will take for the Movie to be made?
Hopefully it will be made by the same company the made Lord
of the Rings.

I think they should wait a bit. Let LOTR calm down first to
avoid comparisons. There's no way in hell that HDM will be
as prestigious, eagerly awaited or financially successful so
the more distance between the two the better. I think it
says 2004 on IMDB but an actual release in 2006 ono would be
fine with me, the book will only gain momentum. CGI will
also have improved by then, which would help with the bears
and especially the final book.

Saw some casting suggestions on a fan MB, jesus fuck hope
the studio doesn't follow THAT

yeah yeah. i knew about lyra's oxford, haven't picked it up
yet, though. i'll get around to it. and i hadn't heard about
'the book of dust', no. that's awesome! looking forward to
it. and i also saw that they've adapted it into a
play at the national theatre. that's crazy!
