how does it compare to others?

it's very clean production.
this turned me off completely at first, but i grew to love
it.

to quote my friend sam "its like watching the sun reflect
off chrome"

beautiful melodies and arrangements.
conjures images of snowflakes, rainbows, sunshine, and
sometimes tropical islands.

plaid are one of my favorites, but i think im alone when i
say i prefer plaid over aphex twin, boc, AND squarepusher.

in any case, plaids one of the best melodic producers ive
heard. the structures and progressions of what they do are
hardly touched by anyone in my opinion. if you arent into
the melodic/playful sort of stuff i wouldnt suggest plaid.

my (lengthy) track suggestions:

kortisin
headspin
fer
forever
milh
ilasas
dead sea
gel lab
new bass hippo
tophapy
lazy beams
squance
assault on precinct zero
new family
zala
diddymousedid
stills
zeal
buns
itsu

another track you should check out, though it may be hard to
find, is "boneskin". plaid had an alias called
"crewmunity"....so "crewmunity - boneskin". one of my
favorite tracks theyve made.

but, there you go. certainly wont expect you to enjoy all of
those tracks, but they are some of my favorites at least.

Rest Proof Clockwork is their masterpiece - practically
anything from that album is great.

yeah tibbar has some great suggestions too. but you know, i
think i could recommend any plaid track. those are just my
favorites right now that i listed.

I have P-Brane and Double Figure, and they're both very
good... hey, you could get P-Brane first like I did, that's
a good place to start... my only problem with that method
was that P-Brane was so good, I wanted more songs... it's
too short...

Rakimou - [Not for Threes] - 1997
Extork - [Not for Threes] - 1997
Squance - [Double Figure] - 2001
Sincetta - [Double Figure] - 2001
Coat - [P-Brane ep] - 2001
Marry - [Spokes] - 2003
Itsu - [Dial P] - 2003

but my favs are sincetta, marry rakimou

I like them though, they're cool... these two cds I have
seems like it's a little in between Autechre and BoC... you
have a little bit of the freaky percussion, but it's not too
crazy... and then you have nice melodies, but they're not
quite as, ummmm, organic sounding we'll say as BoC's
melodies... good stuff!!

Nope, your not alone at all. Plaid are on the top of my
list with Orbital and The Black Dog (with Ed and Andy).

As for recommendations, I'll get to that tomorrow, just
right now I'm too tired. -_-

Why is vintage IDM so beloved?

I never thought that much of Bytes, yet it's highly praised
in avant - techno circles.

To attempt to answer Zephyr's question:

Older - school artist likenings

(Warning: runs risk of sounding limiting or one -
dimensional)

While all the listed artists fall under the IDM banner more
or less, the following bands / individuals are more
reminiscent of certain influential artists than much else.

AE: Einzensturde Neubaten (sp?)
AFX: Stockhausen
BOC: Eno
-->[]: Coltrane
FSOL: (later) Wendy Carlos
The Orb: (obviously) Tangerine Dream
Plaid: Lee 'Scratch' Perry

bola.....or autophonic.

You've got it all mixed up. I see more knocks against
vintage on this board and others rather than praise. "That
sounds dated, blah blah"

disasemble: You, me and Phobia have the same tastes with The
Black Dog. As for Balil, go check out my 'Parasight' post
to see how much I like Ed's side project. :]

i recommend trainer! old school plaid, stuff like whirling
of spirits, summit, soft key and tan sau rock!

not for 3s and double figure are my other faves, not too
bigga fan of restproof, i find it a bit boring at times.
plaid has great melodies however i wouldn't call them
melodic masters, its as if they just play around on the
keyboard and see what notes fit.
