my music sucks

i've been so dull lately... i feel sad for no reason and
incredibly lonely. thankfully, i still have inspiration.

it's just i hear all this music, and then i hear mine, and
it makes me think my music isn't good enough for anyone but
myself. i keep thinking that all this struggling to live the
dream i've had since i was 5 years old is for naught and
that maybe it's all been pointless.

i mean, i know i should take most criticism with a grain of
salt, but i can't help but be severely annoyed and upset
when someone comments on one thing ruining a whole song - i
know they're trying to think of how my music can be improved
and i appreciate that. but it's just that whenever i think
i've written something fantastic, someone else hates it.
*sigh*

ah, dude, i know what you mean, but your music really is
good.

do you like making music? or do you just want to be a rock
star? if you're not doing it because you like it, then maybe
you're not doing it for the right reason.

if you are doing it because you like it, then just
keep on keepin' on, your mood will improve. you've just hit
a sour spot, maybe.

yeah, maybe. i DO love writing music, but i'd like it to be
what i do for a living someday. i don't necessarily want to
be a rock star - i just want to write music.

he's right, you know. but what he doesn't mention is that
it's not just xltronic, it's the whole fucking world.

Ho ho! Ignore what anyone says about your music.. unless
you know them, you've got no idea why their comments are the
way they are. Lot's of people diss things because they're
jealous, un-educated in what you're trying to do, feeling a
bit of power that they can 'crush your dreams', having fun
being naughty, etc. Make music that you love and that's
it. If you're trying to make 'pop' music, that's a
different thing but if you're trying to express yourself
musically, then do it...

What I like about your music is that you are fearless. Not
many would have the balls to do that antarctica anthem you
did, the way you did it.

I was listening to a mix disk at work today and damned if
Rocking Paris the Lovely Way wasn't the most fun tune on
there. The guitar is so gleefully sloppy, and the happysad
tom waitsy chord organ like a tin can blowing in the wind...

oh why thank you fleetmouse. that makes me feel better. and
thank you you jivver - because you're most likely right - i
feel my music is always an audio form of poetry about what
is inspiring me at the time.

i hope to put out a cowboy sugarcakes album eventually....
and i'm hoping to have my three albums that were
discontinued online for FREE soon.

skink - thank you! i'll do so.

this one time we were driving on I-76 right outside of
philadelphia and we were stoned as fuck and our lane started
to disappear as there were cones directing it to merge into
the lane to our left. however, there was a tractor trailer
to our left, and the cones just kept pushing us closer and
closer to it.

when we got to our destination in philly, we were all so
high we couldn't remember how that situation was resolved,
so we determined the only logical explanation was that we
were all dead.

ps i got my part of "joe vs the fax machine mix" finished
and sent it to josh. he'll add guitar approximately "when
he feels like it" which i really have no idea when that is.

around philly. weird.

oh and while i'm spamming this thread:

oddio - MAKE BREAKCORE TRACKS! you definitely have talent
when it comes to making those breaks. that's what you need
to harness.

wait...this ONE time we were smoking and driving on a 3 lane
highway outside philly when someone was coming HEAD ON in
our direction. we screamed "FUCK TYLER YOU'RE IN THE WRONG
LANE WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE" and he swerved to the right and
we missed him. THEN we realized that the other lane was on
the other side of a 4 foot high cement wall. the guy was
going the wrong way on a large highway. :o

i'll probably start writing more of those again soon. my
fourth album, if it is ever released, will consist of mainly
breakcore.

cowboy sugarcakes is sort of like my summer condo - i can
always go there and relax.

yeah i go through those spells now and then.

you just gotta make sure you dont worry about what other
people think about it.

Of course its nice to know people enjoy yours, mine,
whoevers shit. But you also gotta realize WHY you like your
shit, cuz you do, i know you do.

I see my shit as a stepping stone for something greater. I
dont mind the quality all that much, because im almost
treating it as practice. Sure, I love it, but if other
people dont quite like it, i dont care cuz im
kinda,,,experimenting :)

yeah,
just make music that you like. if you like it, chances are,
there are other people out there that will like it too.

you just gotta find those people.

i know that when i hear your tracks, i generally like them.
if i ever sound harsh criticizing them, i want you to know,
that i am just trying to remain objective and honest so that
you will respect my opinion and not think i'm just blindly
hyping up your shit. I would expect the same from anyone
criticizing my shit cuz i want to know how i can improve or
at least what my peers consider good music.

but yeah, your shit is generally good i'd say. i think we
have a little different musical tastes and that might be
reflected in my reviews, but yo, i am just one man. you
gotta make yourself happy before you please me i'd wager.

i think if you want to make a living creating music, you
should consider a change of style. very few artists make a
living from electronic music. yet, clearly the styles of
music that you choose relate to your own personal aesthetic.
you explore the music according to your own needs and
interests. so ask yourself, what is missing within yourself
that leads you to seek validation from others? i think
there is more to this answer than that you want to make a
living playing music (i'm not saying that making a living
playing music isn't important to you, only that your desire
for acceptance and validation is more complex and derives
from something other than this practical goal).

maybe a good lesson would be to identify one of your
favorite, better-known-by-the-public cds. then go to
amazon.com, and load only the one star reviews. richard d.
james album? there's always someone who says "worst cd
ever"! i wouldn't ignore what other people say, and i
wouldn't say that all people are fucktards. people
appreciate music for many reasons, emotional, aesthetic,
intellectual, structural, personal association, fulfilment
of expectation, for lyrical sentiments, and so on. they
have needs and interests that are as unique and valid as
your own. it may be natural to appreciate when others enjoy
your music, but it is also natural to understand that not
everyone will enjoy it.

stop trying so hard to find a reason to make yourself
loveable. you are already loved. make your music for you
and the people that enjoy it, and let the people who don't
enjoy it seek to fulfill their needs and interests in their
own way.

or maybe you're just fishing for compliments!
; )

when i was ten years old, while riding in the car with my
family near philadelphia we came across an elderly man
driving the wrong way down the entrance ramp. he would have
been driving on a major highway for many miles, the wrong
way. as he pulled up closer to us, my father pulled over
and waved for him to stop. the elderly man insisted that my
father was the one who was driving the wrong way, and
continued to exit the entrance.

lastly, we are not dead. we are simply not alive.
