I'm a big AE fan, and I was particularly amazed by Confield and Draft 7.30 when they came out...I was making music myself at the time, and I thought I could see how long those albums must have taken to programm.
But now I've been searching for plugins that work in Sonar3 (vst and direct x) and bought myself some pretty amazing ones, along with some cool free downloaded ones, I'm beginning to wonder how easy it is to do many of the Draft tracks? I'm not trying to be arrogant here, it's just interesting. Fucking around with beats and making noises and head-spinning polyrythms is pretty damn un-challenging with all these new plugins...many tracks on Confield are beautiful, but tracks 2,4, 5, 7,8 on Draft seem far less amazing to me now that I've messed around with effects such as Buffer Overide, Decimator, VstSoundChopper, Random Beat Generator etc.
Or do Autechre program their own plugins?
It's an interesting thought actually, something Plaid said in an interview..."all these new effects make it easier to make noise, but not music."

Interesting that you bring that up. With modern technology it seems that you can do virtually anything.

Yeah it's for PC. It's the latest Cakewalk Sequencer. I've tried Logic and Cubase and really respect them but the Cakewalk interface is just more suited to me.

considering that ae did these things long before those plug ins existed, there is still some respect to be had there.
all the plug ins do now is emulate what they originated.

i know autechre use max/msp, so there is a good amount they probably construct themselves...
your average joe and write a song.
heck, your average joe could even record it all nice etc... but unless the musics good, it doesnt matter.
Autechre makes good music. Thats all that should matter.

Sonar is more likely PC only, as it is from Cakewalk.
Any links to these plug-ins or do I have to fire up google?

Yeah, but what if that music was made in 5 mintues flat with one drumbeat sample and loads of cool plugins? Wouldn't that dissapoint you a bit?
Of course, I'm NO WAY suggesting this is true of Ae, I was just giving an exaggerated example. However, with the SmodjPhace ep I think that could be true! ;)
I respect old Ae music a lot more now. But not their new stuff anymore...I still enjoy it, I just don't look up to it.

just search for "free vst plugins" or "free vst effects" and then take away the "free" bit if you're willing to pay ;)
Although, there is amazing freeware stuff if you look hard enough!

Actually I doubt it'll let you dl unless you're registered, also it's a .sit (mac archive).
If this doesn't work, I can attach it as a file and post it to the EKT forum on watmm for you...

to quote (very loosely) Roger Waters: "Just because you give a guy a guitar, doesn't make him eric clapton."
bands have done great things with much less (White Stripes, Madlib, Pink Floyd)
and worse things with so much more (yanni, n-sync, BT)

What's wrong with BT? He is using the plugins at his disposal to make catchy breakbeat, trance, and sometimes rock or pop tunes, with lots of cool programming to boot. Isn't that a more skillful way of using plugins then to just use them on their own for the sake of it, to produce crazy noise?

I think analysing the way a track is made when listening, even if you don't want to, is a problem all music makers face. I know Aphex said in an interview that unless he's off his face raving, he can't really "listen" to music, he is instead deconsructing it mentally and working out how it was done. I imagine painters/video artists etc. find the same in their field.

Yeah, and though I don't like that Dirty Pop song I respect it's high production values. Utilizing advance plugins to create such a catchy song is challenging.
Anyway, his solo stuff is great fun imo. But it isn't IDM.

The ones I bought are in Direct x format.
The VST ones were free, but weirdly hard to find. Had to go through loads of links...
I'm downloading Soulseek now.

That is a great quote from plaid! I fully agree with that. To me plug ins are a waste of time. I would take three guitar pedals over all the plug ins in the world any day. Plug ins are cool at first but get very old fast and sound fairly flat. Pedals push out and produce tone. IMO tone helps any noise.
