i listened to stone in focus three times today. this album, as a whole, is definitely his best work.

i strongly disagree.
there are some blissful tracks here but as a whole, it really drags. some tracks are just downright annoying.

hmmm. as far as i'm concerned, this one doesn't get the attention that something like rdj album gets or even drukqs for that matter. its just got an alien yet warm quality about it that hes never come close to matching.

beautiful atmospheres... not in the sense that you throw it on and forget about it, but that you throw it on and it consumes you

it's got that quality, no doubt - and it's definitely interesting.
i'd never say it's his best work though.

i agree mostly. it is his best work. it covers a lot, if not all spectrums of emotion,......it is beautiful one moment, dark and desperate in another, nervous, lighthearted, foolish, aloof, fantastical, its crazy good genius work material......
it doesnt get old....
[lichen] is my favorite and most beautifullest of all.......

probably the best album ever made for sleeping as well. its one of the few i've actually fallen asleep to, woken up in the middle of, and thought i was still dreaming because of the strangeness of the noises. some of the tracks are just scary.

its interesting to me because this one seems to divide his fans. from what i've seen on this board, most people who started listening to him pre-drukqs like this album, and alot who started listening after that point can't get into it.

I only started listening to Aphex in 2002, yet this has remained my favourite of his albums right from the word go. It's the only one where I don't skip any tracks at all.
I wish I could make something a thousandth as good as this.

i hated it at first because it was the second aphex release I ever bougth (the first was Drukqs, oops!). It has grown on me with time.
I think it is crazy to say it is his best work though. It's downright boring. This is not an album you can just sit and listen to, you have to be doing something (preferably sleeping).

It's indeed his best album. Truly groundbreaking work. Truly out of this world ambient music, he had some divine inspiration for this one. This one is a means of transportation to the outerspace realms.
Nothing he has done before or since even comes close to it. The nearest thing would be ICBYD but it's still pretty far removed.

This is probably my least favorite album by him. I'm not too keen on straight-up Ambient. Although, the song 'Cliffs' is one of his best.
I don't know, if I was looking to Ambient, I feel that Global Communication's '76:14' is better overall.

5 or so songs from this album were used in the soundtrack to a documentary about amish girls in indiana turning 16 and going into "normal" society to party and decide if they want to stay amish. It was shitty and depressing.

Yeah but no but yeah but no but
It has some great tracks definitely, some fucking great tracks... but I agree with magicant, weaker tracks are of course present, so with tracks these lengths the album is bound to drag.
To sleep to I prefer something with a little (lot) more depth and texture; such as Eno's On Land or Global Communication's 76:14, or more variation melodically.. like on Eno/Budd album Plateaux of Mirror and Vangelis' Blade Runner.

This, groundbreaking? Atmospheric? Have you people not heard any dark ambient music? People like Brian Eno, Steve Roach, Lustmord, Robert Rich, Michael Stearns etc. have been doing this far better and much earlier.
The Magnificent Void by Steve Roach and Stalker by Robert Rich and Lustmord shit all over this in terms of texture, atmosphere, coherancy, and depth. And YES they can be compared because all are deep, minimal, purely atmospheric works, except the former mentioned ones are miles ahead of SAWII.

Ok, maybe it's a personal thing.
But really, SAWII sounds too unfinished and is plain bad in places, ruining the atmosphere. Stuff like Stalker is just as personal and powerful, and atmospheric, but has a bonus of being very well produced, put together, and thought out.
