For archiving purposes what would you recommend? I'm not
sure the extra quality is worth the extra storage space
required...

hard drive. 40Gig ain't gonna cut it

192kbps

there is a big difference in sound quality. but 160 is
acceptable.

192k at least, though 160 is acceptable for some music

thing is I'll be using the mp3s on my seperates system so
that does it. What's good in hard drives nowadays?

i'd go with 160 myself...

i don't think there is that much loss in mp3s.

and sometimes even CDs have bad or just average sound
quality.

i encode everything in ~ 230 kbps vbr

is that stupid?

FLAC!

For serious archival purposes mister Dobbin is correct -
only a lossless compression like FLAC will cut it. But Lame
VBR (--alt-preset standard) encoded files are this " close
so that's what I use. I was using Ogg because it's
marginally better but my new MP3 CD player can't play them
soooo...

as long as you don't use anything lower, anything should be
okay.

use variable bitrate. (VBR)

:: copies and pastes the standard advice ::

The best mp3 encoder is Lame, with the
RazorLame interface.

Best encoding options:

"--alt-preset standard" for normal music

"--alt-preset extreme" for shrill music with lots of high
end you want to preserve

If you can get away with it though, use Ogg Vorbis,
which gives better sounding smaller files in half the time.

And to get wav files off CD use EAC which gives
you error free files (unless you've sandpapered your CDs).

EAC can also encode the files to MP3 using the Lame encoder
but I prefer to do it in two steps because I am obsessive
compulsive.

Phobes should take my post and put it on an FAQ page so I
can stop posting it. It's a valuable community resource
because it increases the proportion of well encoded files on
SLSK!

what bitrate should I use in the General tab, as opposed to
the VBR tab? Needless to say, I've set it to 320kbps on the
VBR tab, but what is an appropriate bitrate for the general
rate?

any thoughts, fleetmouse?

Go to the expert tab and check "only use custom options and
use:

--alt-preset standard

for most music or

--alt-preset extreme

for really trebly noisy music

The rest of the encoding options will be ignored.

256 is nice. But most of the music I archive, I hardly ever
listen to anyway, they don't justify anything more than 192,
and usually 160 is fine.

Anything that's dear to me, has to be well over 192 though.

You old hoarder - how many gigs of music ya got? I got 55 or
thereabouts - gonna need a second 120 gig drive soon!

Oh shit, it's embarrasing... many, many, many, many gigs, on
many many CD-Rs. Some of which I'll probably never hear more
than once, so it's not like I'd ever buy all this shit
anyway.

To my right is every good track ever made, it seems... I
don't know how I can sleep at night!
