yet another chocolate wheelchair thread
I just got the CD and man, those crappy 192k MP3s that were floating around truly didn't do it justice - one of snaresy's tricks is to use samples with lots of room tone / reverb played alternately against very dry sounds, and the MP3s completely lose that - everything gets flattened out.
So yeah, listening to the CD the songs are richer and make more sense structurally somehow. Kewl.

i should think with music like vsnares the high frequencies being more frequently used it would make more of a difference with a low bitrate encoding

yes it does, but usually 192k is sufficient. and it's not a frequency thing 'cause mp3 cuts above 21khz which noone can hear but ithe format has some problems if the track is chopped up very much (fast drums, like vs)
i have a nice stereo connected to my comp and in direct comparison i never can tell the difference between a 160k and a cd. i get my files at least with 256k just to be on the safe side

192k is sufficient for some kinds of music until you a/b the file and the CD on good equipment. Even if it's slow pop music, if it's well recorded and mastered, the CD will have detail and presence that you lose in the MP3, like the breathiness of the singer's voice etc.
I'm extremely picky and the fact that people are getting conditioned to the sounds of 128k AAC files and 192k MP3s scares me - I like CD quality audio!

Also I love the Kit Kat bar on the back of the CD - very clever if you happen to remember the old jingle:
"Gimme a break, gimme a break..."

Dobbin, where's your avatar from? I was gonna say something about Coronation Street when I started to suspect that was where your avatar was from - the palaeolithic black and white era of Coronation Street when the characters had tails and ate raw meat and berries.
Someone should put out a compilation of songs inspired by Coronation Street - there's "Dierdre's a Slag" by the Toy Dolls, snaresy's Abomination Street - surely there are others...
D-Steak, it's a very fun album, right up there with Higgins which is his other high water mark IMHO.

Man, that wins the prize for obscure avatars! He looks like a grim fellow, wouldn't have been out of place in Joy Division or the Stranglers perhaps. Can't you see him drinking with Hugh Cornwell?

obscure? he's tha man! he's had a number 1 single under the name of the timeloards, a remix of the theme of doctor who, then he wrote a book on how to have a number 1 single, then he won album of the year at the brit awards, then he packed in music, then he burnt 1 million pounds of his own money, all the procedings of the album, then he went on a trip to the north pole with a picture of elvis to place the king at the top of the world. this man is a great man. this man is bill.

mimi - it's almost great quality - I encode with Lame using --alt-preset standard, which creates variable bitrate files. They can go as high as 320 when the music warrants it, but a lot of music averages out to 192k or less. It's just that VBR files have that extra headroom when they need it. makes a difference to my ears...
Now on the other hand you have people like inverted whale whose ears are so good he can tell how much garlic was in the tzaziki sauce you just ate by the gurgles your digestion makes, and he hates MP3s and CDs - he swears by getting little tiny men to sit in a radio-shaped box playing child sized instruments.

No one else can make 7/4 time groove and slam and be catchy like on Einstein Rosen Bridge. Listen to it again.
Or how bout near the beginning of Sky Painted on Car where he blends the sound of a voice and a receding boat horn into a huge weird doppler effect? That is so cool.
I admit there's tracks that fall flat - Too Young is just kinda *meh* you know? He did that kinda stuff better on the Badminton single.
