Good music software?

Im a longtime lover of IDm (looongtime aphex fan) and
ambient among other electronic genre's and have for a long
time been wanting to get into the creation of it...if for
nothing else to vent some creativity constructively.

Could anybody name some good software out there, prefferably
free or cheap to register, that i can use to get started? I
used to screw around alot with an old pirated version of
cooledit with some success but im sure there is better stuff
out there now.

I've been listening to all the tracks recently created by
some of the artists on this board that they linked for
people to listen to and have found some pretty
impressive/enjoyable shit (mesquite bbq chocolate milk for
example is fucking awsome, forgot artist name as its not
listed on the file).

Also, asside from the occassional links to recently created
tracks where else should i go to sample more of the stuff
you guys create?

i know theres a chance of getting flamed for being a newbie
asshole and asking such dumb questions but any help would be
greatly appreciated :)

no reason why you would get flamed...

i know theres a number of people who dislike "fruity loops"
but honestly i recommend that program. some of the best
stuff ive heard this year came from that program. its
simple looking and "toyish" looking at first, but deep down
its very excellent and complex.

its good for beginners and its good all around.

its fairly cheap though, though it COULD be cheaper. you
could always download it :p

here is a link to some of my music

currently i have two free eps for download, one released on
inpuj.net, the other released by myself. check it out if you
want, or anyone else for that matter.

but yeah, i suggest fruity loops to start.

I agree - try fruity. You can download a demo and play
around and save your experiments as wavs or mp3s - you just
can't save them as .flp files that can be reopened and
edited. The producer edition also lets you record audio in
if your sound card has ASIO drivers.

Once you get tired of the built in instruments and effects,
you can use all kinds of VST synths and plugins.

awsome. thanx disasemble checking your stuff out right now.
nearing time to hit the sack so ill download fruity loops
tomorrow. What does registration for music software usually
run on average?

On average, free. :-)

If you don't wanna be YARR a pirate YARR then FL Studio
producer edition is something like 150 US. Worth every penny
too -

i have very mixed opinions on piracy. Well, im mostly
against it and really don't feel like stealing
software/music that people paid to create (even though i've
been known to search out cracks and download mass mp3's in
the past :P)

reaktor, kontakt, and ableton live being plugins or seperate
applications?

applications.

reaktor and kontakt come from the same programmers, "native
instruments". quite popular, but i would argue that the
programs are more complex, reaktor especially.

ableton live is made by ableton, and is a live
looping/sequencing device, primarily meant for live shows,
but i like arranging things on it as well. lots of
versitility.

therse loads of other programs too, i just use these more
so.

fruity loops is the basis for most of the songs though. i
like working my basic structure down in FL

would i be able to make tracks as complex and proffessional
as the ones you have linked for download on your site with
FL alone? what are you able to do in reaktor and kontakt
that you cant with FL and its plugins?

well.. ill be checkin in on all this stuff myself when i
download FL and check the native instruments websites. but
sifting through website information, especially pertaining
to shit im not too well versed in, can be a pain in the ass.

just wondering what i will be limited to with just FL and
what the advantages and abilities of reaktor and kontakt are
over FL, in lamens terms :)

you can make just as "professional" or "complex" stuff with
FL alone. in fact, a person i know makes more complex and
profesional sounding stuff in FL alone, tenfold above my
tracks. kid fucking out-funkstorungs funkstorung. just
depends on how much you put it.

program never makes the artist. other programs help you gain
more insight, but its up to you whether or not you want to
use just one. i like branching out, but i know people who
just stick with one or two progs

reaktor is a modular synth. you create from scratch. ie you
connect gates to the gate input of an envelope, then you
create the attack, sustain, delay of it. then you connect
that to a sine/square/triangle/random oscillator connected
to blah blah blah etc.

you can get really intricate and a bit more "mathematical"
with reaktor. but if you can make sounds in FL that you
could in reaktor for half the time, i say go with FL. i use
reaktor sparingly, i cant stand making shit in it for too
long.

ill definitely be downloading FL and putting some serious
time into learning it when i get up tommorow, thanx alot.
I REALLY appreciate your help.

Ill let you guys know when i create something worthy enough
to share :)

I recommend you start with fruity loops and if you ever want
to venture into the hardware realm, get reason first to get
a solid understanding of miid/cv and what different
equipment does.

As to where to hear stuff, Kill_Switch did have a page of
links to all XLT musician's stuff, can anyone remember it?

My own tracks
and some of my older stuff.

Yeah floops or reason, i love reason it's great but for
somebody just starting it's all quite baffling where as
floops is very simple to use.

If you want to check out my stuff go here.

And unless you're already familiar with trackers it has a
steep learning curve ;)

Buzz is good though... it has been used on proper albums,
just because it's freeware doesn't mean it's poor quality.
Watch out for the stability with certain buzz machines
though and I'd advise agianst using it in a live application
:/
