I believe I remember reading the "if you want to send a demo..." section of a label's website and it mentioned that they'd pass it on to anyone they think might be interested in it.. has anyone ..from experience.. found this to be true? and what kind of response do most (the larger labels probably only rarely respond) labels give to those who submit demos? I'm in the process of compiling a best of.. mix of tracks from this past year and send a different demo to each label.. there are a lot of different styles/sensibilities in my scary reprtoire and I want to send the most fitting tracks that hit closest to that particular label's sensibilities I need to know of some good labels to send to.. there's SKAM, Rephelx, Music70, (Notwist's label), Domino, planet-mu Leaf, Hefty .. where else? all input is greatly appreciated |

3, best first etc. On the Rephlex site it mentions the 'if we can't put it out but know someone who might we'll pass it on' bit, but I can't imagine Rephlex have time to listen to all their demos, never mind bother contacting someone else to release it instead. |

Not recently. Lately I just send stuff to labels that have expressed an interest in releasing stuff through hearing mps, to keep them up to date with what I'm writing. For me, nothing's ever come from send unsolicited demos, unfortunately. |

In the article featured in The Wire, Aphex said, "We try to work less off demos, and concentrate more on seeking out things. It's time better spent. It's depressing, it fucks you over, listening to demos, the hit rate is so low." This attitude seems to be reflected by quite a few labels. Of the very few labels that have expressed interest in releasing stuff by me, all have contacted me through searching through mp3s downloaded from my website, ES etc, rather than going through demo CDs. I reckon if the effort is made to put yourself about, promote yourself online/offline, then you're more likely to have someone contact you about a release, than just sending demos. I mean, it can't hurt, but I reckon time could be better spent elsewhere. |

i think its gotta be a case of individuality through and through. the demo will get listened to, but it still has to stand out, if its a good tune but it still sounds like something else youve probly got less chance, it comes down to that little bit of "somethining" i think. |

i've sent out over 50 demos in my musical life - my advice: 1) make demos short, but sweet 2) songs should be to-the-point, no long intros 3) never get discouraged 4) know who you're sending to 5) don't send art or tracklistings, just a disc and contact info written on it 6) BELIEVE in what you send some other good labels: LunaticWorks, File-13, lacedmilk, klankrieg, schematic, beta bodega, tigerbeat6, hrsvatki, tsunami-addiction, ninja tune, activesuspension, MEGO.... to name a few. |

havent heard your n5md release yet portland, but ive heard from people that its tops. cool label, i like how ML released on it. they did a remix for me a long time ago. hadnt heard anything from them til the n5md thing. i got signed to two labels via the internet, randomly. ive gained interest from kranky through a random demo of my ambient stuff but other than that nothing has surfaced. its mostly just interest sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesnt i guess. i honestly cant tell what move a label is going to do next, so i dont even think about it when i send. |

word thanks man. and yeah ML are good stuff for sure. i think if its quality stuff, the label will take notice. try for smaller labels. or labels that are newer. get a few releases out and then goto the big dogs. er, thats just my opinion. :) ochres stuff was bound to get noticed. it was just a matter of time. |

oh and btw, i put 9 tracks on my demo. Id say don't worry about the length of the demo. Just make sure its not repetitive, and never 'boring'. If they like what they here, that gives them a chance to listen to more, and like it even better! I guess it just all depends on the quality of shit. invest time in creating the ultimate bactch of music so the label can't possibly turn you down. Do gigs , competitions / send music to dedicated dj's / radioshows ..create a webbuzz..eventually word of mouth will come to a label-kingpins ear ..and they'll contact you for a demo. You'll send one...and they'll forget ...putting you on top off the shelf with the other 12 demo's of that that particular day. It's sad really. If you really believe in your music ,better save up some dough and press your own shit. good luck |

oof, sounds like youve been trying for a while lucifer, maybe i'm being a bit optimistic in the beleif stakes. its taken me a while to get my shit together but my beleif in MY tunes does get me through. i mean everyone wants to earn a living out of what we love and beleive in but the truth is it doesnt happen for everyone. but maybe to the people who do truly beeive and have no doubts |

Let's face it, if you're just sending demos to Warp, Rephlex, Planet Mu and Skam, chances are you'll come away disappointed. Although saying that, according to Chris Clark he just sent demo after demo to Warp until they finally caved in and signed the bugger. |

Well in my opinion the best thing to do is not give up, do everything that everyone siad here and more, if u want to be signed bad enough you willowrk hard and it will come. That's what is beleive, i would loveto be signed,iam not, but i keep on keepin on! |

what I dislike from certain labels I've encountered, is that they first show intrest in your music, so you'll send a cd. They give really positive feedback and want a track for a compilation . And then you never hear from them again. Happened to me twice, ok the first one did reply to my mail, telling me the chosen track didn't fit the flow of the cd ....but the other one didn't even bother replying. Fucking arrogant. |
