I want to know BOC!

I've just been listening to a few samples of BOC's MHTRTC,
and I have to say, it sounds pretty good.

I've tried listening to them before now, but it just didn't
grab me. But what is BOC? Who are they? How would you
describe their music? What's the best thing to start with?

Comments appreciated. Thx in advance :)

I would start with getting one of their albums and listening
to it

uh yep, that sounds like a good idea. However, I am planning
to buy lp5 soon, as I'm working my way through ae logically,
trying to get into their stuff...

should i interrupt the progress with MHTRTC?

also from allmusic.com:

Boards of Canada is the duo of Michael Sandison (b. July 14,
1971) and Marcus Eoin (b. May 27, 1973). Based on the
northern coast of Scotland, the group got their start on
acclaimed experimental electronica label Skam in 1996 after
recording an obscene number of tracks and pressing the best
of them up as a miniscule-run 12-inch, Twoism, a eight-track
promo EP the group sent to labels in lieu of a demonstration
tape. The pair's first official release appeared on Skam
toward the middle of 1996, and was quickly hailed as among
the label's finest releases to date. Titled Hi Scores, the
EP is an engaging mix of simple, infectious three-part synth
melodies, subtle hip-hop and electro references, and
alternately tense and relaxing beatwork endlessly repeated
in shifting combinations (a la Autechre, Bochum Welt, and
Cylob). Almost a mini-LP at six tracks and nearly half an
hour in length, the debut was followed in late 1996 by a
series of live gigs opening for Plaid and Autechre, as well
as compilation tracks for Uvm and Skam/Musik Aus Strom side
project label Mask (under the name Hellinterface). Further
releases for Skam, Mask, and 4th World in-house label
Ampoule were scheduled, and in 1998 Boards of Canada issued
Music Has the Right to Children. Nearly four years later
(and after the release of only a single four-track EP), the
duo returned with their second LP, Geogaddi.

Why is Twoism $5 more expensive than MHTRTC at $30 when its
just an EP??

Personally I would skip Twoism, go straight to MHTRTC, then
go for IABPOITC, then Hi Scores, and forget about Geogaddi
altogether. Or something.

Shop around a bit,for example I got hi-scores for £5.00
which I belive is a decent price compared to HMV'S £9.99.

IMO geogaddi is the best release to start from,or fail that
MHTRTC.Actually the more I listen to MHTRTC,the more it
grows on me.

I got hi-scores for £3.50 on 12". Thanks to those lovely
people in the shop at ATP :D

Yeah, I'd get MHTRTC, then ABPOITC and Geogaddi. The
rerelease EPs are pretty throwaway IMO, and definitely not
up to the standard of the aforementioned CDs. Still, if
you've money to burn it might be interesting to see where
they came from I guess...

mhtrtc and geogaddi are must haves

hi scores and iabpoitc too

Its weaker than other BoC releases, but, as you said
not weak compared to some imitators.

eevry release is as good as the next, so gt geogaddi as it

I wouldn't be too fussed about where you start with BOC.
Unlike Autechre, whose development has taken them through a
pretty wide range of sounds, BOC seem more concerned with
refining and perfecting a certain feel. So if you like that
BOC sound, you should be happy with any of their releases.

It's very interesting following ae chronologically, but less
important for BOC, I think.

just get MHTRTC... it is their best, it's a full length
album, and it's what started all the fuss with them...

well I agree with you though I dont give it much importance
really.

I mean, yeah, sure its better to get first a full lengh
album, but if he finds iabpoitc instead I wouldnt say no to
that
