I dunno why people were so bloody disapointed with Smojphace, it was a remix and two noise tracks, what did you expect? If he wanted to release a proper single I'm sure he would've had no problems doing so... but it's RDJ, you should know he likes to fuck around and he's been getting worse and worse. Another Windowlicker would be nice - can't see it though.

oh come on, how're you going to tell me i'm not a fan? what have i been listening to for the last several years then?
i disagree that a good plaid album has to sound like their older work. for me this has a lot of elements of double figure but crossed with some of the best elements of autechre and harder stuff. i think it works really well on this album. and just remember, the first 3 albums were a trilogy, so it only makes sense spokes would sound like a departure (one that i don't think was for the worst).

we didn't know what it was for a long while, just that it was an EP. it could've been anything. think about windowlicker, come to daddy, donkey rhubarb, etc. all good to excellent EP's. even the MEN1 release was a great EP in my opinion. the disappointment was that this one is horrible.

come on, sheath is 95% GREAT tracks, it just depends on what kind of music you like and how much you know about and have heard of the music that was made when LFO were just coming out and some of the other influences (not just house, acid, and detroit techno.. listen to "what is house" on frequencies). if you can appreciate the style & aesthetic then sheath is an excellent album.
spokes is not ghey!!!!!! you plaid fans are ghey, what exactly is ghey or bad about this album?!

Sorry - what I meant was generally everyone who's said Spokes is good doesn't like their other stuff. Most positive thoughts on this album have involved people saying this is the first album by Plaid they've really enjoyed. For the people who love their other stuff, mostly, like myself, it was a huge disapointment. I'm all for artists progressing but it is a definite step backwards in songwriting imo.
RE: Smojphace - When it was revealed the first track was a remix, that should've been enough to convince you it wasn't a major new release. I didn't expect much and thus didn't get let down.

i think the songwriting's good! i don't know, maybe the last album had more memorable melodies (especially "eyen" which is probably my favorite by plaid), but this album rocks! it's just fiercer and harder hitting and i'm excited that plaid can do that and STILL maintain their melodic and off-kilter flavors.
smojphace shouldn't be taken as a major new release, but unfortunately when you're a bigheaded artist with shocking contempt for your fans and just release one cd of new material in two years (26 mixes i don't count since it's all old except for windowlicker acid edit which is most likely an outtake from '98 or '99) we have no choice but to see it as a major new release.. and that's why it's so disappointing

DF definitely had more memorable moments - I struggle to recall anything off Spokes aside from Zeal and maybe Marry. I think P-Brane - with Coat and Mfaus - showed that the beats could get colder and harsher but the quality of the melodies was excellent. Another problem I think is that Itsu and to a lesser extent Miami Vice were also brilliant tracks. Spokes just leaves me cold. Obviously the band wanted to shift direction, I'm hopeful the new project will be more successful.
I don't for a minute try and guess what's going on in Afx's head and why he releases what he does, it does seem contemptious to us but since we have been on this message board day in day out for a couple of years we could possibly be a little over-zealous with regards to his new releases, hmmm? :D

Smojphace, definatley. Other than that I think all releases I've bought have at least met my expectations.
