some of those abbreviations are useable. "U" or "r" are actually good at saving time. Anything containing "8" i it, or contracting whole sentences, is just plain ridiculous.
Or so my 15 year old sister tells me

the use of @ is appauling
its bad enough when they say 'i live @ london' or whatever
but some treat it as the letter A, such as 'ill brb in @ min'

the fact that "@" is harder to do then simply pushing "a" makes it utterly pointless

4lL is "all" in 1337 (leet = elite = hacker) speak
(the 2nd character is not an I but an l)

Have you seriously never seen or heard of this 1337 speak?
You couldn't have missed it anywhere on the net, even if you think it's bollocks (well it is a bit ridiculous but that makes it funny)

I think there is little need for abbreviations such as these when you are using a full size keyboard and you're not having a "real time" text based conversation. I must admit I do use "LOL" occassionaly, but only when I do genuinely laugh or at least chuckle out loud.
