Damn, I heard this peice for the first time today.
Its a piano piece, with solo male singer, writen by Schubert. (the poem is writen by someone else, whos name escapes me at present)
Im not sure how many of you dig Schubert... or classical style singing... but this is an awesome peice (his opus. 1 actually!)
its a poem about a father riding through the woods with his son, trying to get him home, because the boy is very ill.
The boy keeps seeing and hearing the Erlkonig (german for the grim reaper) but his father just keeps telling him it will be ok
when its the father talking (singing) its all powerful, and heroic kinda sounding
the child is sung very dramatically (he IS dying)
and death is fucking creepy. its all high, and when ever he is singing, it modulates to a major key so its all freakishly happy... he is trying to lure the boy into his grasp...
but yeah... if anyone likes romantic era music, and doesnt mind classical style singing... check it out
it rocks
