My band's first show was last night

I was nervous all day yesterday, even though it was just
campus band night and there wasn't really anything on the
line and we weren't getting paid. Before we moved all our
gear I had a few shots to calm my nerves.

The first band I was in is just me and my friend Tom. He on
bass, and me on guitar. We just decide on a key and jame
for a little while, then end and repeat with a new key.
Plus we did an Elliott Smith cover, since he's a big fan.
We fucked it up majorly but the jams still went well.

After that, my second band (called Mein Sexy Kampf) starts
getting ready. Our drummer Kalyan comes over to our singer
Scott and tells him that he doesn't want to play drums. He
says he's sick of drums and doesn't want to do it. So we
all start freaking out. It gets way out of control and then
finally he says he'll play and we're all relieved. When
we're all on stage and done soundchecking he tells me he was
going to play the whole time and this was just a prank to
create a Spinal Tap-esque moment. I was so pissed off, but
that just fueled my performance. Anyway, we started with
our cover of Nazareth's "Hair of the Dog" and the crowd goes
nuts. We played it just about as perfectly as we possibly
could and we went nuts on stage thrashing around and shit.
After that, we continued with "Father & Son" by Canned Hamm,
"Somebody's Watching Me" by Rockwell, "Does Your Chewing Gum
Lose Its Flavor On The Bedpost Overnight" by Lonnie Donegan
and His Skiffle Group, "Luster's Lament" an original tune,
two songs from Hulk Hogan's 1994 album, "Night Goat" by the
Melvins, and "Hey Ya" by Outkast. It went about 10,000
times better than I expected and the crowd (which was way
bigger than I thought it would be) had a great time. I got
a lot of comments afterwards about how people enjoyed it a
lot.

We videotaped the set and hopefully I'll find some way to
get it online sometime.

hey that would be awesome to see if you can get that show
online, id love hear hear those songs, especially your take
on "hey ya" because recently i have been obsessed with that
one song. that seems kinda funny what ur drummer did, but
im sure it wasnt at the time, as ive had many scary close
calls. like the last jazz band concert (im the head of the
guitar section) i told one of my players to make fucking
sure his guitar was in tune (cuz last practice it was waaay
off but he still decided to play louder than anyone else)
and he said just about said one of the scariest things i
have ever heard in my life: "i dont know how." wow talk
about a fucking mind blow, this kids playing the school jazz
band and HE DOESNT KNOW HOW TO TUNE HIS FUCKING INSTRUMENT.
luckily i found a tuner and did it for him. arrrrg. but
yeah, at least you guys were good, jazz band kinda sucked,
even tho i rawked it up on the wah-wah with shaft. w00t.
"hes one bad motha..."

Yeah I can see how that tuning thing would be really scary.
As bizarre and awful as our drummer's stunt was, it sorta
makes sense for him. He has a weird sense of humor.

BTW, I played Shaft in my high school jazz band also :)

playing in front of people is the best.... great feeling I
know, I used to be in a band that played somewhat regular
shows for about 6 months. It was awsome. Since then I have
now joined up or started up 2 bands sorta. And uh.. well be
doing some stuff live soon after christmas probably, and
when we do ill get some good digital vid of it, for sure.

''Our drummer Kalyan comes over to our singer Scott and

No wonder... what do you call someone that hangs out with
musicians? A drummer! Ahaha... anyway, fuck him, go get Mike
Portnoy.

The video of the first song is up! Click HERE to
see it. Sorry about the poor quality, but it's the best we
could do with out limited equipment. We should have the
rest of the set up soon.

Right on! (i feel so 80's saying that! :D)

I had forgotten that that was the name of the song! I love
that song!

Guitars sounded good clean and chrisp! I just wish that the
picture wasn't so small!

Cool to see a video from that!

i remember my first gig - it was at CDX, an independent
record store that is now defunct, back in June of 2001. I
made horrible flyers for it, and i think about 20 people
came tops.

i got all the way there, and i was late, because i had to go
all the way back home because i forgot power strips - the
show was okay, but it could have been much better. it was me
on keyboards and drum machines through a PA speaker, with NO
effects.

my second gig was actually better - still no effects, but
much smoother - this was two months later.

my last gig was in october of 2001 - it was quite good, lots
of good lighting, and plenty of audio effects this time, and
no silence, but barely anyone showed.

so anyways, no more live shows with keyboards and drum
machines for me. i'll stick to my computer - though i plan
to incorporate my keyboard, turntable and effects into this
set i'm developing.

i'm so jealous of all you people that can actually go out
and perform. that's really great, though, i like hearing
about this kind of stuff.

and i'm also looking forward to the 'hey ya' cover!

yes, get that "hey ya" cover out, I'd love to hear someone
else pull that off!

Thanks for the kind words, guys.

hedphukkerr: It's not a talkbox. It's me playing and our
singer going "Wah wah wah wah wa-wa-wa-wa-wa-wa-waaaahh" at
the same time.

Our version of Hey Ya is pretty heavily changed but still
damned cool. I'll let you guys know as soon as I get it.
