this thread is strictly for people here who are fans of hip-hop but think jay-z is wack, untalented, a joke, a fake, whatever. if you don't like hip-hop anyway close this thread. this is a really interesting and poignant story from 9th wonder, acclaimed producer of the hot underground group little brother. he recounts his own longtime prejudice against so-called commercial hip-hop, how he snapped out of it, and his recent studio time w/ jay-z. ----> <---- for the record, i love jay-z. he's not my favorite rapper (not even in the top 10) and i don't own all his albums but he is easily one of the most skilled emcees of our time and of all time. i eagerly anticipate . |

you know, i don't know much about jay-z, but having only heard his singles and the unplugged performance he did with the roots, i like him quite a bit more than other mainstream hip hop artists. most of them don't get enough appreciation from people who claim to like "underground" hip hop. on a basically unrelated note, i'm stuck back in 1999 listening to deltron 3030, which is a really amazing album. |

There's dialects and then there's just plain mangling of a language. He spells the same words differently throughout. Motherfucker and Motherphucker. Just weird. Maybe there's a reason. Interesting read anyway as I think it applies to all music really. |

Jay-Z is obviously talented. You only have to listen to his albums to hear that. He is someone who can produce a commercially succesful album that has a proper mixture of radio friendly hits and darker tracks. He's not as good as Nas as far as I am concerned but he still has more talent almost all of MC's who come in for less stick. See the fucking stupid thing with modern hip hop is that other famous rappers have tried to copy Jay's style to try and get a commercial hit, instead they produce complete and utter shit and start saying "it is a piss take of rappers like Nelly and jay-z"...everytime I am like "what the fuck...hahaha...you only jealous because you can't do what he does." But again this all goes back into this media fuelled fasination with new genre definitions. Music should be judged by whether YOU like it or not. Fuck everyone elses opinion. |

Just to add on about the Nas thing...Jay-Z has released more consistent quality in his albums over the years, but when Nas is allowed to flow the way he can, there are only a few rappers around who can match him. Just my opinion anyway. |

this thread rocks. like too many other threads, instead of people IGNORING the threads that they have no interest in, they feel it it necessary to bash the topic-at-hand to prove that their opinion reigns supreme, and thus they are of elitest group. im not a big hip hop fan i wont lie im from detroit (cough-20miles outside of detroit-cough) and never really grew up too much on it. Didn't have the chance. I appreciate almost all music now (electronic music actually GOT me into other types of music); but for those who just bash, piss off. I've always liked Jay-Z since vol2. with hard knock life and can i get uh (popular songs that first made me get into him). After that I listened to quite a bit more (the non-radio songs off his albums) and really liked what I heard. I've had a pretty good overall feeling from him about his talent. |
