way back in the late 90s when i was beginning to familiarize myself with AE, aside from a few choice beats on 'amber' and such, i didn't quite comprehend how it could be that they regarded their music as principally hip-hop oriented, as they have stated in interviews, what with their 80s graf-writing and ol' school rap history.
of course, as time went on, the hip-hop influences have become more apparent to me, but it wasn't until the other day that i've finally SEEN THE LIGHT: just listen to the new Aesop Rock, or virtually anything on Def Jux, not to mention the obvious: lex records (duh!)! it seems the b-boys the world around are finally catching up to Autechre's pioneering efforts! agree?

No, not unless their watches are running fast.
If anything Aphex has done more to further the Def Jux sound than ae as El-P on a number of occassions has name checked Aphex as a big influence.

I love Autechre, but I don't think they are THAT groundbreaking, and ahead of their time... they make some awesomely weird music... and it takes skill to do so... they are excellent music producers, but they aren't the savors of music imo...

that's just it, it's weird, it's different. That doesn't mean they're ahead of their time.
Once i thought merzbow was ahead of its time. Will all electronic music eventually evolve to this..? yay!

Merzbow is not ahead of it's time, there was a whole culture of Noise brewing before Merzbow came on the scene, as far back as NON and Boyd Rice in the late 70's

autechre are very good... and in some cases ground breaking and pioneers... but what I like about them is the great music they produce no matter how ahead of its time it is... if it is
