i stumbled onto the older members of my family watching psycho 3, or 4... whichever one has the lady getting stabbed in the mouth hidden in the wood pile in the basement, when i was a little kid.
although i hardly remember it, that moment still makes it hard for me to go into dark basements.
but, the only horror movie that has made a real impression on me as an adult is the shinning. i watched it by myself one night in a house i used to live in where almost the entire downstairs was windows, and it freaked me out something fierce.
