Do you like your own music too much?

I think I have figured out my problem...every track I start
to work on that I really like I end up listenening to the
first minute and a half repeatedly thinking how good it is
until it reaches the stage that I am totally bored with the
track and it never gets finished. I never put these tracks
on my zebox because I always think they are too good and
need to be finished properly before I do it, but I never get
round to finishing them...I have just realised there is no
point to this topic but I have typed to much to just delete
it :D

I know what you mean. I have some tracks like that. They've
got some undefinable quality that you just love but you know
for sure that it's no ready. I have too many tracks like
that :-/

yes i do that ALLL the time
but i don't work on tracks for weeks usually so i don't have
enough time to really listen to it and get sick of it before
it's done.

i listen to my own shit waaaaay too much though it's not
healthy :P

It makes sense that you'd listen to your own music most
really. There's no better music for you than what you make.
It's 100% customised baby!

Yes, I agree. Once you get to even quite a basic level of
competence you can make tracks close enough to how you want
them. As a result it's exactly the sort of music you'd want
to listen to (why would you make music you don't like?)

I haven't burnt a "listening copy" of my latest stuff, but I
will shortly... I need a new tape for those boring drives to
uni each day.

but
when you make your own music, chances are that you know it
inside out and even if you love it, you could miss the
feeling of not knowing what happens next... but then again
that can be experienced in the making process and could be
^12 more exciting...

why not release them at the length they are, thats what I
do. Hundreds of bite size tunes lasting no more than 2
minutes.

I am sortof in the same position...

When I start a track I get an idea of how I want it - but it
rarely turn out as good.
I am using other kinds of ways to put together tracks now
though, and it seems to be going quite well.
I hope I can finnish tracks soon again (like I used to be
able to)...

peace.

that to happen..

>> I end up listenening to the

Yes I do that too. I've given up making my own tunes for
the time being and am concentrating on doing some bootlegs.
Its quite fun actually.

If I do that, I always leave it a while before working. That
way I come back to the piece with a fresh outlook, and add
loads of stuff on. Sometimes a track can take months of
going away and coming back, but it sounds excellent when
done.
Most of my songs are far too rushed, though. :(

hmm. i rarely even sit down to do anything to begin with,
really. the whole process for me is pretty lazy. i don't
know what the hell my deal is, really...because i love doing
it. i should do it more often. then i might get good, too.
=D

but this unfinished thing...hmm. i'd say everything i have
is unfinished. and i often go back and change things months
after i've "finished" (cut it off because i had no idea
where the hell i should go with it). kinda googly like that.

like I said... why don't you all submit your unfinished
tracks and put them al together. maybe even get people to
say why they think it's unfinished.

listening to/making your own tracks is like masturbating, it
takes more effort to do it yourself but it usually turns out
just right (if you've been doing it since the 6th grade),
whereas listening to someone else's music could really blow
your socks off in a way you didnt think about doing yourself
like using a vaccuum cleaner and crisco or something, and
you didnt even have to exert any energy

I can't stand listening to most of my songs. The reason
being is that I hear the song at least a thousand times
before I release it or whatever.

The songs I like are the ones everyone hates. The ones I
hate are the ones everyone likes lol. FIGURES.

my own music makes up 50% of my total daily audio intake.
40% is video game music, and 10% is - i guess published
music.

there's nothing wrong with enjoying your own music - i think
what's most important is that you are satisfied with what
you are doing - because if you're confident in your work,
others will be too, eventually.

The annoying thing about my own music is I can't tell if its
actually a good overall track until I've left it alone for
about a month without hearing it.
