Anyone a fan of the series? (Well, hardly a series. Only two games and really only one if you live in the US)
I enjoyed the games. I was lucky enough to have a friend burn me a PAL version of the european shenmue 2 that works on my US dreamcast. I mean shenmue gets a little bit of too much credit from some people, but it's still good. I'm hoping that a shenmue 3 will be made which will hopefully end the series. I broke out my dreamcast the other day and I'll probably be playing some shenmue soon.

I've never played either, but I want to... everytime I go game shopping, I look for it used, I'll pick it up if I see it.
It doesn't sound like something I'd be too into though, seems like it would be very time consuming. Main character is a real hottie though.
Dreamcast... I wish it was still alive and kicking, it coulda been a contendah. Without Sega in the hardware wars, things just don't feel right anymore. I can't get emotionally attached to Sony of Micro$oft.

I prefered the second one because it was a lot bigger and varied and your housekeeper wouldnt drag you home if you stayed out in bars too late like in the first one.

I busted out my dreamcast today -- Never got around to playing it, but I think I might be able to pick up a copy dirt cheap.
Can't beat Jet Grind Radio though.

I didn't like jet grind radio much either. These games tend to have top ratings too (for these newer systems). Also rayman or something, maybe rayman III, had great ratings. That game sucks three asses. and the final fantasy game for ps2 sucks four.

I'm fully into the Sega Dreamcast again now...
After I found bit torrent sites like : Supernova ... click on Games, then Dreamcast
and ISOHunt
Dreamcast rocks, download the ISO, load it into your Burner program, onto CD-R.. then play it on the Dreamcast. simple. no modchip needed.

I bought Shenmue for Dreamcast used for like 6 dollars because I'd read a bunch of reviews saying it was great. I played it for a while and it never really kicked in, I just had to wander around the city asking people things and they'd just tell me to go to someone else, and the new people would tell me to go ask someone else, ad infinitum. It really got on my nerves, so I just popped in NFL 2K1 and forgot about it.

What is the idea behind it? Like I say, I never really got interested. Does it play out like an RPG type deal?

Is this the game with... all the SAILORS? ;)
Kidding, anyone who's seen that TechTV skit knows what I mean.
thecurbcreeper: I've never played the game but the environment enthralls me too. I like that sense of immersiveness, like in the first Deus Ex (I wanted to like the second one more, and I did like it, but I just found it to be too claustrophobic).

Yeah, claustrophobic is definitely the word... what SHOULD have been a sprawling Seattle at the start of the game is can be sprinted across in a jiffy. Itty bitty environments.
Are you talking about the skit with the chubby Ryo? ''Have you seen the guy that killed my father''? The same guys that did the Metal Gear Solid in the Supermarket thing?
Shenmue 2 is OK, I picked it up for peanuts a few months ago, but haven't really gotten into it, no time. And getting into it is key... someday I will.

i beat it today. the gameplay tends to be frustratingly tedious, but when it's fun, it's fun. the story/cinematics save it from being terrible.
optimus prime gives it five transformations out of ten.

i agree with the tedious. and when it's good, well, it's good.
i'd rate it a bit higher though.
