mmkay, this is what happened to my pc today

1) i wake up this morning, turn on the pc, get annoyed by
the speed of the thing

my computer is full of crap, so i figure reinstalling
windows, deleting old crap and defragging the hd would speed
things up

2) i stick my windows xp cd in the drive, choose 'install
over current installation' or something like that

3) installation finishes, virusscanner does not work
properly anymore, and bang!. i caught the blaster virus.

i fixed it more or less, virus is gone now
but the pc only boots 1 out of 5 times, my taskbar is fucked
up, its even slower than before

HELP!

oh yeah i meant to ask

if i reinstall windows completely instead of just use the
'update windows installation' thingey, will it keep my
files?

i dont feel like losing 20 gigs of mp3s, all my .docs, my
own tracks etc

3) the same happened to me the other day

it seems that viruses can hide in System Restore folders,
because no antivirus scanner is allowed to scan those
folders..

So, I reformatted AGAIN

If I were you, I'd partition my drive and install the OS on
a separate drive, and archive everything else (mp3, pr0n,
shit, this and that) on another partition.

it's a good idea to disable system restore, as this is a
potential hideout for a virus.

just download the msblast-fix from symantec.com

im scared of partitions. i made one once on my old computer,
and it was impossible to get rid of afterwards.. so my HD
was split in half for the rest of its life

im desperate tho, so if you could tell me how to do that ..
please

props to jedi chris for sending me the patch, without that i
would still be seeing 'windows will shutdown in 1 minute'
warnings

"i fixed it more or less"
Better REALLY fix it cause it could lead to some BADDDD
problems. Stop using anti virus's and get your self a nice
firewall (Black Ice Defender is a good software one)

Keep in mind "Computers always do what they are suppose to,
and never what you want them to do"

Find out what is screwing it up and fix it.

Sorry for not being more constructive but I have no clue
what to say : \

if you're not comfortable with partitioning in DOS, I'd
highly recommend Partition Magic, which can be downloaded
freely from any p2p application.

Run - Msconfig - Start up - Uncheck everything, that might
speed things up.
also Ad aware is amazing for finding spyware CACA, and panic
ware have a nice FREE POP UP Stopper....

go on iMesh or Kazaa and get yourself a copy of partition
magic. There's a tool in there that lets of you repartition
and move files around I think. Might be what you're after.

I think it's possible if you use partition magic, yes, but
there is a slight risk

just install another windowsXP or 2000 on the same partition
and then back up your files with it. you should be able to
pick which OS you want to start when you boot the pc

Bad idea....who needs two versions of Windows on the same
system? He's got a virus, thats all.....reformatting will
fix it. But it how he backs up his work before, is the
problem.

Partition Magic may work, but seriously Jareon if you on
have 30% free, I am not sure whether that is large enough
for you to create a partition large enough for what you were
talking about keeping. And as Nlogax said, there is slight
risk....I wouldn't personally mess around with third party
products that do things to the disk. But thats just my
opinon.

yeah, backup all your shit to cd-r's and format the whole
disk

but im desperate man

and from what ive read, partition magic works...

i only need 16.5 gig to back my data up, and i have 46% free
space left on my hd (just checked and deleted some useless
files)

i think im gonna try it, buying a new hd to back my shit up
just costs too damn much
