[ ] heaven
[ ] hell
[ ] 'some' kind of existence after death: not really...
though i still have a bit of hope...
[ ] god: not as a person. maybe as a force, like the
gravitation force, or something that we cannot imagine. but
no way an old white bearded man with an eyed triangle on his
head or something like that! - mermaids are more likely to
exist. : )
[ ] anything church related: i believe that church has made
some good and some bad things... but well "anything church
related" is too much of a vague question, you could also
believe that the pope is old and going to die and that would
make you check the box...
[-] there is a soul: somehow. but maybe it is nothing
but interneuronal connexions and other material things...
[x] there is a universe: well, of course there is! and maybe
there are more than one...
i hope there are more than one! : )
[x] i interfer with a 'reality' which is part of the
universe: eh? i think yes... but... i'm not sure i
understand the question o_O if i didn't check the box that
would mean i do not do anything at all?
[ ] there is a sense in life apart from what i put in: to
reproduce..? but... that's not what i'd call a
sense.
[ ] i do like my ottakringer beer right besides me yours
please: i don't like beer that much...

i believe in ..
[ ] heaven (i don't think that the definition of heaven can
be assumed to be agreed upon...)

[ ] hell (see heaven)

[x] 'some' kind of existence after death (this is
unquestionably a fact)

[ ] god (see heaven)

[ ] anything church related (i don't really know what you
mean by this)

[ ] there is a soul (see heaven)

[x] there is a universe (i would prefer "there seems to be a
universe")

[ ] i interfer with a 'reality' which is part of the
universe (not really sure what you mean)

[ ] there is a sense in life apart from what i put in (even
less sure what you mean)

[ ] i do like my ottakringer beer right besides me

"[x] 'some' kind of existence after death (this is
unquestionably a fact)
"

how is that by any stretch of the definition, a fact?

i didn't intend to provoke a confrontation with that
statement. but i will say, it *is* a fact. can i
demonstrate to you why? do i have an answer for those who
claim it is arrogant, or presumptuous, or closed-minded, to
observe (when asked) that it is a fact? have you ever known
anything for which you possessed no persuasive evidence to
demonstrate the validity of this knowledge to others? are
there facts which are not widely accepted? or facts
shrouded in misunderstanding, half-truths, superstition? in
this case, i will assert that yes, i do know that this is a
fact. i feel that i am bound to assert this fact to anyone
that asks. many, many people will not believe me, some will
be angered, some mildly irritated, some indifferent. why
would i care? but it's fun to talk about, isn't it?

so you go around spouting off 'it's a fact i tell
you!
' without having any reason? I think most people
call that a belief; that is-- believing something without
having a basis for that something in reality

offline plaidzebra from so long, xlt on 2003-10-07 22:47 [#00893880]
Points: 5678 Status: Lurker

what makes you think i don't have a reason? what makes you
believe that my assertion is not based in reality? at the
very least, you do not know.

i think it's good to know that your experience does not end
with the death of your body. i do think it's useless to
blindly believe this. i realize that people do assert all
sorts of ridiculous ideas from time to time. again, i think
it is important (for reasons beyond the scope of this
messageboard) to assert positively this fact, *when asked*.

fine, tell me how it is a fact then

ask yourself, "why am i so concerned about this? why do i
accuse someone of "spouting off" (it's not "good" to "spout
off" you know) for sharing their opinion? what motivates me
to be emotionally involved in this issue?"

why not say, "this person says he believes that he knows
something that i believe he cannot know" and move on?

you can accept that someone might disagree with you, but if
they assert as fact something that you cannot accept,
especially with a controversial issue, you hear them saying
"you are wrong, incorrect, invalid, ignorant, etc." you
want to either prove me wrong, or you want me to admit that
i do not know what i claim to know.

after all, you can't react emotionally to what i say and
then claim that you don't care about what i say, can you?

have you ever known anything for which you possessed no
persuasive *immediate* evidence to demonstrate the validity
of this knowledge to others?

i'm sorry if i seem glib or unhelpful. i don't mean to be.
i'm afraid that you ask me to paint a picture (whatever your
motivation) that is far beyond the scope of the canvas we're
sharing. certainly, if anyone could say, "look, here's the
evidence, pretty black and white that your experience will
continue beyond the death of your body," they would have
done so.

note that humans have operated the scientific method as a
means of systematic inquiry for only a few hundred years.
how old is mankind? how old is the earth? how old is the
universe? a successful scientist is a patient scientist.

my advice to those who want this question answered is as
follows. first, i would suggest that you view the issue as
unresolved, and instead of drawing a line in the sand, "i
don't believe," try an agnostic, open-minded perspective.
accept that you do not know. if you really want to know,
then think to yourself, honestly and unselfconsciously, "i
want to know, will my experience continue beyond the death
of my body?" return to this idea occasionally, and meditate
on it for a few moments. do not obsess over it.

ask yourself, "who can i trust? who do i trust?" and "what
do i really know, that i did not learn from other people?"
and "who is the person that knows?"

okay,
"sharing their opinion" ‚ presenting a fact.

I'm glad we cleared that up, you should keep that in mind in
the future.

facts aren't defined by 'beliefs' or 'opinion', they are
defined by 1. reasoning 2. logic and 3. reality; beliefs
and opinions by definition cannot make something a fact.
