what kind of music do you play at a cafe 7 p.m in the
evening? i'm doing exactly that in about...well 7 pm. it's
just for half an hour, but should i cram in as many tracks
as possible, and/or just stick to one genre?

see what the crowd can take
they wont be listening anyway
i was at a party yesterday and there was a grand piano, so i
start playing and this guy introduces me, and after 5
seconds of playing everybody starts talking even louder than
before! had probably to do with the fact that i'd been
practising for 1/2 an hour already.
so i played that one track, i only have, like 40 times, with
some variation, people said they did like it afterwards
so: i dont know

Hmm 7pm is a bit early for Evil rave IMO...

I'm with Fly Agaric- some more loungey laid back stuff.
Loads of Ninja Tunes stuff would be appropriate, also
"Ithinkbothunderstood" by Neutrino(mp3s freely downloadable
from the mush records site).

What is going to be played by the main DJ/act?

it's called "bring your own records evening". it'll be about
30 dj's...and i got the worst timeslot of them all.

Hmm, an open deck night, eh? Well screw all ideas of
continuity then, people will be playing all sorts. Play
whatever you like- if you're not actually "warming up" for
someone you've no obligation to play something to gradually
get the crowd in the mood for the following acts.

In that situation I'd do a late 80s/early 90s techon set
just because it's unlikely anyone else would, but people
would still probably like it.

i'd suggest something that would get peoples heads nodding a
bit and getting their feet tapping....i wouldnt blast them
out with LFO and Amen Andrews too early on as well.
Try and build it up a bit rather than playing random
tunes...i'd suggest kicking it a bit slow and maybe playing
some hip-hoppish kinda stuff firstly...perhaps some prefuse
73, RJD2, Madlib, NoW, BoC and Four-Tet...
break em in gently...
then you should start to break out and get a bit more
uptempo slowly....

just a suggestion...... :)
hope yer gig goes well.
