I have this theory that the #1 thing stopping people from
coming into the electronica scene from any other genre is
the lack of lyrics. People have these stupid preconceptions
about what music has to be in order for it to be listenable.
I mean, people can like something on hearing it, but they
just wont listen to something actively unless it has lyrics
to it.

It's quite said. And I totally agree with ophecks, I'm
starting to like singing less and less, I appraise hip hop
music just for its beats more and more, and I wish Bjork
would shut up so I could hear her tunes. In fact, I wish
pretty much everything came in instrumental form because 90%
of the time it would be better! Maybe I'm getting carried
away a bit but it annoys me sometimes, especially when what
people are often really listening to are half-assed
electronic melodies in pop-songs when they could be
listening to Richy Rich.

Isn't this ''Celine'' in the custom remixes? Performed a
vocal Nannou? It was good! It's still there, I bet.

Ok mark this:

Im only listeing to electronical music beacuse i sing so
bad. I do not want to see my self walking don the street
singin the text to my favourite song, that would be way too
cruel to the ppl in my surrounding. There for i pick my
music after the lack of singalong effect. The less the
better.

ya but ur voice can be an instrument too..
the less dependant it is on lyrics the more of an instrument
it is, i think
like some radiohead songs especially
i dont mind it then

But if an instrumet sounds bad it could be because somone
haven't tuned it. If you sing bad that's your own fault.

not only do 'people' want lyrics to sing along to they also
want them in the usual verse-chorus-verse arrangement. That
way you can be singing along before you've finished lisning
to the song 1 time.

ya i agree w/ u xanatos...

maybe they feel they can relate to lyrics more easily than
beats...

OR.. GET THIS:

vocals are in the same language people communicate and think
in..
so they'll feel more at home w/ some guy singing words they
can relate to as opposed to rhythm/beats

but maybe some people (like us) are more used to rhythms..
we think of them more, we spend a lot of time analyzing
them..
and because of that we can convey emotion through
non-lyrical music more easily

ie. boards of canada can be very effective at that without
the use of lyrics

You are right, what one want to hear is fully subjective,
and can be altered. There are no absolutes in what the bain
like to recive from it ear nerves, that's manipulative.

Fashion is a good word here. What we experience can be the
sound of tomorrow.

I totally agree with your theory Xantos, kids are bombarded
by TV showing all the popular videos, all with singing in
them, making them believe singing is a necesity for good
music.

[editors notes: i didn't mean JUST rhythms... just other
musical tools other than lyrics:
we dont need the singer to tell us he/she is feeling down,
the music tells us)

Electronic music conjures up INFINITELY more vivid and
poweful mental images because they have no lyrics...
nobody's telling me what to think, what the song means.

It's so sad when people won't listen to SAW 2 because there
isn't any LYRICS to tell them how they should interpret the
track.

offline mylittlesister from ...wherever (United Kingdom) on 2002-02-26 23:51 [#00103791]

I think lyrics are good because they give u something to
relate to and to try and understand, and music is amazing
cos it just takes u somewhere. I try and make misleading or
titles that are really ambiguous, but still hav meaning in
them. I like meaning and metaphors, I cant help it!

Xanatos:

agree - it seems lyrics serve as a type of backbone for pop
music ? a lot of music really .. so i guess it is perhaps
not all too surprising that when people listen to largely
instrumental electronica (ie. thrown in the deep end) they
are kind of lost and have no reference point, and so all the
beats, the seemingly chaotic synths appear hard to follow??
maybe [seems like a bit of an extention to yer theory]

personally i don't mind lyrics .. altho i prefer without. I
do however very much like the use of vocal snippets (v v
short) as a percussion hit .. ie. Funkstorung do this
wonderfully .. ie. what is being said is nonsensical - but
the actual timbre of the sound seems quite innately familiar
? dunno .. just blabbing

its like they aren't creative/open/independant minded enough

u shoud be able to come up w/ ur own ideas to accompany

i fully agree with you xanatos
even when "electronica" songs do get popular, they are
always the ones that have lyrics. "around the world around
the world" "i am the fi-ya staa tah" or the new "wheres yo
head at?"

my theory is that simple people or people with no
appreciation for music need to have the lyrics there to have
something to relate too when they are listening. it's
easier for them to find meaning in words than in sound.

what i hate is how pop bands feel like they need lyrics even
though they have nothing worth saying. i mean, if you are
gonna say something AND put it to music, shouldn't it, at
the very least, have some importance or poetic merit; and
not be just "fo da nookie?"

meaningful... makes me sick, these rich, spoiled brats whine
to cater to the little idiot ''rebels'' that listen to their

i am not, however saying that lyrics are only for simple
people. i am just saying that some people NEED lyrics and
some people can appreciate more than just the lyrics.

only music of insufficient sound needs to be backed by
lyrics to convey its message. those who can implement
legitimate sound don't need lyrics, for the sound conveys
the message all on its own.

Lyrics can also add to music. They arn't all Nicleback and
Backstreet Boys. Velvet Underground's music was great and
lyrics just added too it. Voice can be very powerful in
conveying emotion as well. It doesn't have to be words.
ie. Sigur Ros.
