Bill Gates tackles malaria...

What do you do with your money if you are the richest man
in the world? Go to Africa and find a cure for a killer
disease, Bill Gates decided yesterday.
The founder of Microsoft travelled to rural Mozambique to
announce the donation of £100m ($168m) to fight malaria,
ushering in what some call a new era of philanthropy.

He almost doubled what the rest of the world - governments,
the UN and charities - spend on a disease that kills a
million people every year, 90% of them in Africa.

The Guardian article

Not that much seeing as he's worh £28.5 billion. If the
world wasn't divided so starkly between rich and poor we
wouldn't need such donations in the first place.

Its like a mugger throwing you a penny after he's kicked the
shit out of you and stolen your wallet.

I am not the biggest fan of Microsoft or Bill Gates. But the
fact is, when he started out, he was just some nerdy little
guy who built computer programs in his garden shed. It's a
decent gesture no matter how rich the guy is. Now if only
more obscenely rich people would channel their money into
worthy causes...

I would but that doesn't mean what I just said is untrue.

Rich Westerners make a mint from exploiting the devloping
world and that's why they have such poor healthcare
provision. You can't just applaud Gates and not recognise
what he and his ilk do to the world.

But to have rich you must have poor. He has so much because
most people, and especially those in the poorest countries
he's supposed to be helping, have so little.

Fuck Gates and fuck his donation. We should be taking over
the bakery not gratefully excepting the crumbs from the
table of the rich.

I know what your saying. The guy is a cunt. Microsoft are
corporate fuckers, and aye, 3rd world countries get screwed
over. But $150 million is better than a kick in the sac.
Even if it is just a shameless PR exercise to show how
"compassionate" he really is.

To be honest I don`t fuckin know, and judging by the state
this planet is in, I don`t fucking care.

No, we went in and plundered their resources leaving a
legacy that causes untold suffering today. If you want a
more recent example look at Iraq.

I can only assume that you are a racist. But please prove me
wrong and explain how Africans can not develop their own
countries and why they need our help.

Er because these African states are constantly at war,
Jonesy that is just not our doing. And you don't know
anything about The British Empire. It was a subtle entity
that worked with tribal leaders to create trade agreements
and such. The British Empire was based on trade.

But why are they at war? Do you even know?

Yes it was based on trade, trade which rested on slavery,
violence and exploitation. Why do you think we had the
world's biggest navy? Because we thought it looked good?

I'll quote Churchill:

"I am strongly in favour of using poisoned gas against
uncivilised tribes. The moral effect should be so good that
the loss
of life should be reduced to a minimum. It is not necessary
to use only the most deadly gasses; gasses can be used
which cause great inconvenience and would spread a lively
terror."

seriously, all you cats got it way wrong.

the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is worth around $5
billion.

His main desire is to help stem the tide of AIDS and other
diseases in third world contries. He bankrolls more
projects, at such a generous level, than any government or
foundation ever has.

And yes, he's been doing this for years.

jonesy,

No chum. The British Empire was based on rule of law, peace
and security wherever British rule extended.

Just take Ghana, formerly the British colony Gold Coast,
peaceful, prosperous and a plum amongst the Colonies in
Africa. Handed over at independence, reduced to penury by
Nkrumah, and thereafter falling into ruination amongst war
and strife. Britain recently returned to stabilise
conditions and also recently the Queen was asked to visit
which she did and was stupendously welcomed.

Slavery violence and exploitation are the current conditions
of your mind - you need escape from all that chum pronto!

Yeah, for the BRITISH, that is, but not the people already
living there! Promo, my friend, read a textbook. I'm 16 and
I've already learned about the exploitation and colonization
of Africa by the British (along with France and some other
countries). The British Empire didn't invade Africa to make
peace; their main goal was making money and expanding their
empire. Look up "apartheid" in any history book, and open
your eyes. Maybe your British textbooks that you learned
from are biased.

My main criticism when people slate rich people for not
doing more is that to be honest, they have no idea how much
they may actually do.

Some celebrites will opt out of "charity work", refusing to
take part as they realise it's a lose-lose situation. If
they don't take part, they're seen to be at least
spoilsports, at worst selfish gits. If they do take part,
people say they should do more and that what they are doing
is just for publicity.

It shocks me that people do not consider that some may be
abiding by the biblical teaching that it is better to give
in private... I don't know Bill Gates' finances personally,
for all I know, he gives over 50% of his income to worthy
causes and simply has the decency to not make a song or
dance about it.

I know if I was in a position to make donations of that
size, I'd probably not mention it (unless it was a cultural
donation- I'd have no snags having a museum wing/whatever
named after me)
