Dear God this is why I avoided him for so long... I hate getting into artists late in the ballgame when they already have a huge discography with tons of rarities and eps and singles...
After work I gotta go get SAW 85-92, or Surfing on Sine Waves, or Saw II. If my favorite little boutique can't help me, I'm gonna have to hit :: shudder :: HMV.

Our money is worth cents on the dollar. Thank god food is still relatively cheap.
Well I dint get nothin... they were all out of SAW 85-92 downtown... I could order it at my usual music store but fuckit, I'm gonna order it online and have it delivered. Too lazy for all this running around on the off chance some pile of bricks will have it.
HMV was so fucking depressing. They have a tiny section labeled Drum & Bass with a few things by Autechre and Aphex and that. They arbitrarily put the warp stuff there and had other stuff in a "techno"section... it's always been that way, and anything good is overpriced.

There used to be a large HMV in harvard square, but it either went out of business or closed or moved or something. They had a decent electronic selection, but kinda pricey .
The Virgin megastore on newbury st. is where I usually go now, or Newbury comics.

fleetmouse: it really sucks when you end up with all tracks available in some form or another, and you desperately want new releases from such an artist (yes aphex in this case), but there's nothing you can do about it except wait, so you make sure you buy up all the official releases available, and when you've gone and done that you start downloading albums you already have, in hope of finding that past feeling of listening to such tracks for the first time. whew.

Wow it's like an alcoholic wringing a drink out of a bar rag! :-)
It won't happen to me - I like too many different artists and styles.
But I'm listening to some fresh copies of SAW 85-92 I just downloaded - they don't have the encoding errors of the first set I downloaded, and man it's like nothing I've ever heard before. This must be what that first shot of H feels like.

fleet, you're just getting into aphex, or what?
for those of us who already have everything, i find that neglected releases sometimes double as new and exciting ones when you go back to them.. for example me and caustic window compilation. for me it still sounds very fresh. classics also.

yeah, I find that too... although I've tried it with classics, you know giving it another chance after ages not listening, and it still sucked to my ears... but I do find that with lots of cds... I'll buy something, listen to it for a while and not really get into it, and then after a few months I'll pick it up and it'll click... it's awesome, almost like buying a new cd...

I go with j198 here, i never saw what anyone else does in saw85-92. apart from tracks such as "we are the music makers" and .. um wait no that's the only half-way decent track on the whole thing.
SAW2 kicks its ass by miles. it has beautiful melodies so it does.

Yeah I first got into electronic with ae, then when I heard some Aphex it was like, hey, not complicated enough. But I'm finding that SAW 85-92 is like an iceberg - there's lots under the surface - it's slippery and elusive, like FSOL's dead cities - there's something about it I can't quite grasp after repeated listens, and that pleases me.

You live in Montreal fleetmouse? As amazing the city is, we're fucked for CD stores. There's HMV and Archambault. THAT IS ALL! They have mediocre IDM and electronica stuff. They overprice their stuff, and it's fairly mainstream.
If you want a good electronica store, it's on St-Catherine, near the Concordia university, between St-Marc and Guy. It's called CD Esoterik, I bought most of my Aphex CD's from there.
There's also Cheap Thrills, it's a small store on the second floor of a house, 2044 Metcalfe. I bought a couple of AFX EP's there, they were normally priced, about 15$.
Finally, for more indie-rock Québécois stuff (the whole GYBE family, per example), you must go to L'oblique, 4333 Rivard just near the Mont-Royal station.
