Alan Wilder did some sort of electronic music project after having left DM. Does anyone remember the name of this act? Was it any good?

Yes, he has been doing a project called Recoil since 1986, when he still was in Depeche Mode. Now it adds up to 5 albums and a few singles. I only have the second album Hydrology, released in 1987, and in my opinion it is great! A bit Tangerine Dream'ish in a way. I haven't heard any of the later albums but he has collaborated with a lot of interesting people. Read all about it - pluss som really interesting facts about Depeche Mode - on Shunt - The Official Recoil Website

I agree with you, but I think he has himself to thank for it. Maybe he's tired of the super-stardom of Depeche Mode and just feel pleased with some quiet acclaim.

I only just came across Recoil, bloody hell, this stuff is way better than recent DM output! Subhuman is amazing, anyone know what the older albums are like?

martin gore? whats he got to do with Recoil?
I listened to Unsound Methods but i don't think its as good as Subhuman, with the new album, everything just seems to come together perfectly, the vocals, beats, soundscapes. Have to see what Liquid is like...

Liquid is also amazing, but constructed differently. it's a concept album

btw :
Liquid's music continues in much the same vein as his previous album, Unsound Methods, but it considered to be a concept album revolving around a near-death experience in 1994. Wilder and his partner, Hepzibah Sessa, were driving in Scotland and a Tornado Bomber hit a hillside in front of them, and two airmen were killed. The idea of the album, especially the bookending track "Black Box", centered around what was going through the pilot's last moments of life.

so, if you like SubHuman and Liquid - you might try and approach and enjoy the previous Recoil works - as i did lately. some of the tracks are better some worse, but i dare say the two latest albums are his best achievements so far.

cool, will do, thanks for the info! Looking forward to getting Liquid, i'll order it with the 2CD set of Subhuman... how are the ambient versions of the tracks? Are they just missing the vocals or is there more tinkering than that?

is the "ambient version" of subhuman totally instrumental?
(I might consider it then, but otherwise I must say that the ordinary version of subhuman makes me sad. escpecially with dm's latest effort "playing the angel" in mind - alan made a real mistake when he left dm, such a waste of talent!)

not a waste at all, Subhuman is way better than Playing the Angel, the last great Depeche Mode was Songs of Faith and Devotion imo... they certainly miss him
