this might be too obscure, but especially if you live in
the united states you might want to check out this label
(based in new york). i just heard two albums,

apikal blend by sogar, which is a largely improvised blend
of amorphous static and warm hums which coalesce into
intriguing melodic relationships and occasional rhythms.
unique and excellent, takes the predictability of idm out
but leaves the detail, texture and melody.

frame by shuttle358 is a rerelease from a few years ago,
it's very low key minimal techno (no kick drums at all) with
subtle melodies. imagine pole without the persistent
dub/hip hop and warmer, emotionally resonant melodies, a
dash of saw II and a few crackly, glitchy sounds. excellent
late night listening.

12k records

it's hard to get a feel for these records based on the sound
samples though. the music needs time to expand.

one small bump for these excellent underappreciated
releases...

i've been listening to a lot of Taylor Deupree stuff
lately... i'm really enjoying "post-piano", the album he did
with Kenneth Kirschner... very delicate, haunting stuff...
i've heard a bit of Christopher Willits (some of which was
really beautiful), and a bit of Sogar's Apikal.Blend (but
hasn't sunk in yet, i've only given it one listen)...
this label seems really interesting, and doesn't seem to get
mentioned much here... who else has heard much 12K? what
artists should i make a point of checking out? which Deupree
albums are the best? and what about their sister label,
L-ne?

forgot what it was. I will tell you i liked it as i recall!

for those interested, the "post-piano" album is not that far
afield from stuff by Murcof, Tim Hecker, Twine, or Alva.Noto
and Ryuchi Sakamoto's "Vrioon"...

since this thread has seen the light of day i'll add that
sogar's first album "basal" is as good or better than
"apikal blend." his album "stengel" on the french label
list is also excellent.

the only album i have by fennesz is "endless summer," but
it's a good point of reference for sogar (though sogar lacks
the overt romanticism of that album and the guitar input is
more subtle (if sogar's even using a guitar at all, it's
hard to tell for sure)).

l-ne seems to be more minimal, i haven't heard any of those
releases. the only 12k releases i've heard are sogar,
shuttle358 and some of the web-based limited edition mp3
releases (of which only sogar's appealed to me).

i'll definitely be seeking out more shuttle358, "frame" is
still the only release i've heard.

here's a good reference for reviews of experimental music on
12k and other labels:

thanks dude... it's always good to find more webzines for
electronic... these days i'm finding stylusmagazine.com
really interesting... it's actually where i first heard
about sogar...

i've heard clips from L-ne at the record store i go to...
and yeah it was like minimal stretched out single sine tones
for the most part... maybe if i took the time to get into
it, it would be interesting... but i'm already busy with
shit like that from the Hafler Trio, and Phill Niblock... so
i'm not sure if i'll be checkin' much of that out any time
soon... but yeah if you haven't heard Christopher Willits,
you should... really interesting stuff... kind of a cross
between Oval and Fennesz, only the guitar playing is pretty
nimble jazzy type stuff instead of ambient washes...

the guy who maintains the hauntedink/twentyfive page also
writes for stylus magazine.

thanks for the recommendations, deadeight.

vp, i'd be interested in hearing your reactions to sogar if
you get a chance to hear it.

If you like spacey abstract ambient you should really really
really check out Kenneth Kirschner and Taylor Deupree's
"Post-Piano"... it takes a few listens, but after a while
it sounds really gorgeous, in a restrained, creepy sort of
way...
