i have a question about females and electronic music

i've been listening to a lot of male artists who do
experimental/soundscape/noise techno-type music - ranging
from the earlier artists such as pierre schaeffer, edgar
varese, to the more recent sounds of autechre, keith
fullerton whitman, hafler trio, etc. but i have heard very
few females in this general 'area' of music, possible being
nic endo, hanin elias and somewhat neotropic. anyone else
that you guys/gals know of?

i prefer fido carlos, the xylephone playing dog. he's a
street peddler and uses his dog bowl for collecting cash.
imagine that!

Women just seem to prefer to listen. Very few women seem to
have the metal to really go for it in electronic music. I
think the only exception I've come across recently is Hecate
and I think she is pretty bloody good.

Out of my 450 CDs, very few are by females. Alanis
Morrisette's ''Jagged Little Pill'', a Supremes greatest
hits set... Everything else is male dominated bands with a
female lead singer. I have some Garbage and all the
Cardigans CDs, and the Cranberry's ''To the Faithful
Departed''... not much. Definitely no estrogen-injected
electronic music, that's for sure.

I just bought Haha Sound by Broadcast, I think it's going to
grow on me immensly. I'm not into the whole girl lead
singer thing but this is unlike anything I've ever heard.

Blechtum from Blechdom (sp?) are two chicks too, although
they are awful.

i think one of the most recent tracks that gave me physical
shivers up and down my spine was the 'timesteps' one off the
clockwork orange album by wendy carlos - fyi, autechre also
played this track in their recent breezeblock mix.

anyone wanting some female electronica, (or at least, with
female singing) try alphawezen,.. I've incluided some random
tracks form the album, she doesn't sing in all of them, just
about half, if you like what you hear, go into your local
record store and order a copy of Alphawezen - L'Apres-Midi

jenf,

I appreciate your sentiments but the fact is that women just
aren't in electronic music period. The amount of women who
just do electronic music and decent electronic music at
that, you could literally count on one hand. This topic has
been done before anyways and I often say its a shame there
aren't more women doing electronic music but the fact is
they just simply aren't motivated enough. I guess at the end
of the day there just isn't the drive and motivation in them
for it. That said my sister is pretty talented and has done
plenty of wicked tracks and has a very good ear for strong
melody and soul and loves to experiment.

heheh that's the fact, is it?

first off, there are plenty of women in music. so we know
that there's no lack in "drive" or "motivation" there -- so
it must be the specific type of music.

my opinion as that women see technology, not music, as a
boy's club.

Generally girls like dancey pop so they can wiggle their
behinds. Which is fine by me, but more XX chromosome people
would be welcome at glitch/breakcore gigs me reckons.

I'm going to get shit for that probably, but it's true in
the same way that the only reason men could watch Sex and
the City for is references (and hopefully visuals) regarding
tits and twats.

omg.. am i seeing what i AM SEEING here? SOME men
generalizing on the fact that women aren't into electronic
music? what is this? non-secular pre-modern sentiment locked
into sexist misogynistic asswipe? come on promo. think
before you speak for once! no offence, but your fingers
walked before your brain made any decent comment.

yes, there ARE women who appreciate much electronic music -
much more than you probably do as we speak.
there ARE women who can produce way better shit than most of
you egocentric males, as we speak.
there ARE men who dislike experimental electronic, as we
speak.
maybe you should reconsider the looping tracks on your
playlist and realize that there are females out there.. you
just have to find them .. or even care for fuck's sake..

yea i was going to say something but i felt it was painfully
obvious that they were making gross and totally unfounded
generalizations.. just because this lot doesn't know many
female electronic and experimental artists doesn't mean they
aren't out there, especially on the unsigned and indie
level. i mean how presumptuous can you get, saying it's not
something women are generally capable of. pretty
disappointing to see that on this board but what can you
expect, 99% of the regulars are male.

when i initially started this thread i was asking if anyone
knew any other female artists in the
experimental/soundscape/noise/ambient type
electronic-technological production scale of things - not
'hey why are chicks not into doing this stuff?'
so when i get 'idjit' (so idiotic that they are idjit)
responses to a question i never asked, and those answers are
even more assinine, i feel like im walking into the world of
pre-industrialized monkeymen who haven't really advanced
past the 'making babies and hunting for food' stage of their
brain.
sorry for the insults to some of you guys, i know some of
you are decent but for the other minority, you've really
left a sour note.

offline jenf from Toronto (Canada) on 2003-09-13 23:31 [#00861734]
Points: 1062 Status: Lurker

and i should add, the lot of you guys who make music, is far
from experimental and close to pop-oriented, mainstream
tunes, so really.. who are YOU to judge a female's
abilities? especially one you have never searched for or
heard of?

jenf: people are stupid... it just happens that there are
more men on here... so you see that they are the ones being
stupid...

...but in reality... if we had an equal number of girls
here, I think there be just as many stupid girls.

So, please dont generalize! :-P

do you guys know neotropic? Riz Maslen is her name and
she does electronic music. Also there is Cosey Fanni Tutti
of Chris and Cosey. Cosey Fanni Tutti was a member of
Throbbing Gristle, a band which split to form Coil, Psychic
TV and C&C. Here is a page with some sound clips. There are others out there I
can't think of any more names though.

"It's important to stress that the male domination of the
music scene can never be attacked by the quantity of women,
but only with the quality of their work."
Nic Endo (who
considers herself a feminist by the way).

She is absolutely spot on, in my opinion. Discuss.

the last time i was in a conversation here about this was a
few weeks ago... these threads always spark a little of
controversy...

not to intending to start shit, but it is pretty clear that
expermental electronic is a typically male crowd... that's
not to say that there's not plenty of female fans/talents...
but it's not just a coincidence that probably 90% of the
people here (if not more) are male... and probably a similar
percentage of all the people who i personally know, who
enjoy this kind of music are male... the way i see it, the
more females, the better... i'm sure in a few years time,
when the overground has further overexposed itself, we will
see more females involved...
as for wicked females... along with those mentioned, i'd add
Sachiko M and Ami Yoshida...
