i picked up the new silver mt. zion memorial orchestra and
tra-la-la band with choir today, already listened to it
twice (the first three tracks the first time, the whole
thing the second).

all i can say is wow. wow wow wow. by far, to me, the best
and most moving material the godspeed collective has put out
to date. although i think a great many will be turned off by
most of the vocals. i myself find it to be highly affecting,
and greatly adds to what is certainly an instant classic. i
can't praise this enough.

my favourites so far are track 1, sow some lonesome corner
so many flowers bloom, and 2, babylon was built on
fire/stars no stars.

highly recommended to anyone even remotely interested in
post-rock. this has just taken the genre to a whole new
level.

No, in my opinion, they can't do better than the first album
(which is my favourite album ever, by the way). Their style
is quite different now, anyway.

yes i got it the day it came out, but have only had a chance
to listen to it once.
quite fantastic, i must say.
i like the package too.

though, yes, i must say efrim's vocal style is kinda
irritating. i suppose ill get used to it, and it doesnt
detract from the music too much.

oh man. i downloaded it and it was totally awesome until
efrim started his proverbial nails-on-the-chalkboard voice.
then i quickly turned it off. he needs to never sing again.

yes, he sounds like either a pussyfied jeff mangum or neil

i'm probably the only person into the singing on this board,
as i'm also into some folk music (ie the indy scene's
interpretation of folk music). well, i'm sure at least one
other person will secretly be into it, while posting topics
about how dope venetian snares is (kill a child today!).

i had a twenty minute arguement on whether that was a
picture of a dog or a pig on the cover of the booklet, while
eating falafels with a friend at my local falafel bar.
actually they were shawarmas, or something like that, and i
still don't know the nationality of the food. any help?

i loved the first disc, and the singing on the second
complemented the music nicely, but this is just an overdose.
he drowned track 2 in a voice that sounds like it smokes 4

i think yanqui could have used it, as i'm in the camp that
points to it and calls it 'more maturely composed, sure, but
that doesn't make it any less boring'.

and, NO! godspeed is perfect w/o the singing, especially

jeff mangum basically = neutral milk hotel. if you don't

alison shaw = cranes. your nonsensical little girl voice. i
recommend the song 'beautiful friend' off 'loved'.

if you know my bloody valentine, then you should know
cranes.

for nmh, you have to listen to the entire album 'in the
aeroplane over the sea' at least four times. and then you'll
understand.

no slick production, just brilliant lyrics and songwriting.

This topic was designed for me!
1) I love the new TSMZMO&TLLB(WC). I don't have the proper
album yet, but I dl'ed it from slsk about a month and a half
ago. I hugely love it. My fav track was 2, especially the
"brightest light I ever saw..." part, but has shifted to
track 3. Simply stunning.

2) His voice is a double edged sword for sure. While it is
quite without talent, it's excused because it sounds so
heart-felt. By the way, perfect description of Efrim's
voice on this album = Neil Youg crossed with Sarah
McLaughlin.

3) The new Do Make Say Think will be absolutely amazing,
for sure. It's entitled "Winter Hymn Country Hymn Secret
Hymn." I've heard 4 of the 9 tracks live, in fact I taped
the show and have heard them several times and simply love
them all! This album was recorded in a couple of different
rural (= barns) locations, like Goodbye Enemy Airship was.
I don't know which album was recorded in a church, but it
sounds familiar.

4) all who like Silver Mt. Zion will love Esmerine. It's on
Resonant records, and features Bruce from GY!BE and Beckie
from ASMZ as its core, with guests such as Efrim and Thierry
from GY!BE. Check it out, it's beautiful.

no, i like singing a lot...just not efrim's.

and i'm pretty sure the picture is of a dog. most likely
wanda, efrim's dog who died of cancer a few years ago, to
which 'he has left us alone but...' was dedicated to.

when exactly is the new do make say think album coming out
anyways?

October 6th for the new Do Make Say Think. Here's the write
up from the website, to get you excited.
Do Make Say Think have fashioned a fourth full-length album
of tremendous beauty & depth, more loosely woven than
previous records & played with a dark, wistful restraint
throughout. The songs on Winter Hymn... are eerie &
iridescent, composed & captured with mesmerising attention
to detail, guided by the band's most intricate & intimate
guitar passages to date. Many of the songs feature a
newfound non-linearity in compositional structure that once
again raises the DMST bar for imbuing instrumental rock with
heartrending - yes, even hymnal - narrative ideas. More
than any previous effort by the band, this is an album that
yearns to be listened to as a whole, or at least in the
triptychs defined by the 3-sided vinyl edition.

SIDE A is driven by introspective guitar work, full of
delicate transitions & devastatingly soulful punctuations.
These first three tracks rank among the finest & most
finessed music the band has yet set to tape -
impressionistic & fragmented, while remaining coherent &
perfectly controlled. SIDE B relies more heavily on horns &
a recurring jazz groove in the rhythm section, while SIDE C
brings on the rock & pop denouement, beginning with an
explosive track that devolves into cut-up & eventually gives
way to the celebratory album closer (complete with submerged
chorale).

Recorded in three sessions over the winter & spring of 2003,
most of the tracks went to tape at two rural locations. The
resulting campfire vibe on much of this material is
reminiscent of the band's second record, Goodbye Enemy
Airship..., but with more complexity throughout. Mixed by
the group at th'Schvitz, their Toronto home studio, the
album continues to highlight DMST's inventive production
touches, always at the service of the musical ideas.

Winter Hymn Country Hymn Secret Hymn is available on compact
disc & three sides of vinyl. Both formats are chipboard
gatefold jackets with lovely original art
