Saw a documentary on all his films, not once did he fail to congratulate himself "oo yeah that was really a great film" (GI Jane a great film, Black Hawk Down? WTF? Two of the shittiest films of all time) on his creations.

listen to his cigar related antics on his directors comentaries; half the time you can hear him chewing on it or re-lighting it. quite distracting plus it means he cant control his craving for 2 hours so that he can address his audience fully

sorry for posting twice but the page got jammed. black hawk down is wicked! some great shots and tight scenes. on the whole he is very good but he usually does the studio favours ( which are weaker) in order to get time for his own projects. hannibal was made so that he could do black hawk down and the upcoming crusades movie. he does the odd weak film but even the greats have at least 1 stinker...

no way! Black Hawk down is just stuffed full of bigoted american propaganda, the hoards of blood thirsty somalian fanatics, the good up-standingeveninadesperatewarsituation american soldier... I've always wondered why Scott has a fetish for the US army...

I was reading in, uh, well it was the High Times, but I was reading an article about how the government made Ridley change the way he was going to do Black Hawk down.

yeah i know it is patriotic but you gotta remember that ridley scott is from the generation who's fathers fought the nazi's and the kind of genocide in adid somalia was of a similar kind: it does however implicate the american government and military commands lack of policy or ability to commit to the cause when it became tough. it shows the somalis from outside mogadishu as nice people and the pakistanis kinda save the day at the end. certainly patriotic but since the soldiers in the battle believed in patriotism i dont think it would be skewed from the general western perception of things. war films are either patriotic or condemnatory and since they were fighting an evil bastard the patriotism is acceptable.

I agree with you on the "war films always tike sides/are partiotic" but i don't think the somalian war lords were "evil". In all tribal societies you have chiefs who arm themselves and serve personal and minority interests. The somalian war lords may have had extreme and confused views on the west and western values but they didn't pose a direct threat to US hegemony in the African Horn. All intervention was unecessary and provoked a great loss of life (huge on the somali side). The US caused far more deaths than the ones their reacted to in the first place. Comme quoi an american life is worth 1000 african lives... :-)

in general i like most of ridley's films, he does action REALLY WELL, and he is talented.
in his defense. doesn't EVERYONE in hollywood toot their own horn? i mean thats how you stay working, keep your name in the papers, etc... very rarely (prolly at the end of their career's) do directors ever say they made a piece of shite. another thing to consider is sometimes it's the editing that can RUIN a film, and directors don't always have say in that. FILMMAKING is a community project, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
welcome back mr. k! =0)

make Black Hawk Down had some hot action in it, the blood work was mind blowing.
Never bothered with commentary, and who cares for hollywood feature flicks like that?
