Devine + Reznor

And now you are working with Trent Reznor. What's he like?

He's actually really cool, very professional. Trent wants a
different sound, so he was looking for a sound designer. He
flew me out to do a studio session. He's nothing like you
see in the videos. Meeting him was more like a corporate
meeting. He introduced himself like I knew nothing about
him. I'll be polishing his tracks on the new album, adding
breaks and transitions."

quoted from Devine on a recent interview... should be damn
interesting to hear this combo.

yea the new album that will probably be released
2010...after 50 other people 'polish' up the tracks.

no offense to devine or anything, but its really too bad
trent didnt pick somebody else to work with. i would have
liked to see him team up with the bolaman, or somebody else
more "feeling" i suppose than robotic richard.

i don't see why he needs other people to do this stuff at
all anyway? he seems able..
i've always thought of nin as a one person kinda thing...
sometimes having one uncompromised vision of the music is
better.. he should keep the others out, unless they can do
something completely unique/different with him..

trent is just trying new things.. like richard said, he's
probably just going to be adding certain breaks and
transitions.. the feeling will still be pure reznor,
probably just a bit more futuristic sounding which i think
will be interesting.

NOTHING is a solo effort, when it comes to mainstream
artists.

even if it was all written and performed by just one guy...
you still have other people doing mastering etc...

dont be so shocked.

what's mastering?

offline Zeus from San Francisco (United States) on 2003-09-03 00:28 [#00847407]

mastering is like... the final touches put on an
album/tracks

EQ etc. Basically just making it sound as best it can.

It does wonders too...

my friend had a track released on the compilation "6 Records
Breaks Your Heart Again" (a sublabel of Warp).

He showed me the track after he finished it. And its a great
track... no doubt. Then, he handed it over to the label, who
sent it to be mastered. I then got the CD, and holy fuck it
sounds 10x better. So clear, and warm.

taken from some site:

audio mastering / what is mastering?
you've heard of it, do you know what it is?

the mastering studio is the place where the final dimension
of sound
quality is brought to a recording. experienced mastering
engineers with
specialized audio tools work at bringing each project to its
maximum
sonic potential.

Mastering (also called pre-mastering) is the step between
mixdown
and manufacturing. in the mastering studio each project is
critically
evaluated on a high resolution monitoring system. any
deficiency in
the sound is then addressed and careful processing is
applied to make
the project sound bigger, warmer, clearer, punchier, louder,
more
3-dimensional, more natural - or whatever may be appropriate
to that
particular recording. Some processes that might be applied
at the
mastering stage include:
· dynamic enhancement
· transparent limiting
· equalization Stereo width expansion
· multi-band compression
· dynamic EQ "Tube" warmth
· harmonic enhancement
· track level adjustment
· click & clip removal
· hiss & noise reduction
· sample accurate editing & fades

additionally, mastering is where the final assembly of the
album occurs.
in this process the project may be edited, songs placed in
their proper
order, gaps between songs adjusted, fades performed, noises
& glitches
removed, and so forth. most importantly, all changes and
enhancements
in the mastering process are done in close consultation with
you, the
client, to make sure that the end result that fits your
vision of the project

i never really bothered to get into nin at all, but reznor
and devine sounds like quite a brutal combo.
richard devine was one of my fvourite live shows i've ever
been to. and he's super cool also.

devine isn't doing any real music for the album, just
minimal sound design type things

at any rate, i can tell you that this hasn't happened yet
(and may never)

from Devine...

"He flew me out to do a studio session."

dude, he's met with reznor but he hasn't contributed
anything musically yet. this is the truth, take it or leave
it. i'm not going to argue with you, i know this for a fact.

what a fucking crybaby!

skinny puppy joined up with otto von, now trent has to go
with devine?!

all trent ever will be is the little boy the skinny puppy's
"dig it" video.

that's what happens when you have no talent, and have to buy
your way into the mainstream with someone else's ideas.

fuck this, fuck tapeworm, fuck the coil releases under
nothing, fuck paying the other artists on nothing, fuck all
his overpriced wanna be "programmers" (more like a slew of
brain washed trent reznor groupies trying a psudo
"apprenticeship") and fuck the lathe of heaven!

trent reznor needs to go slump back into quake and doom or
whatever the fucked he played or did for the last 5 years
before he released the horribly tangented the fragile (great
abulm, but majorly lacked continuity)

hmm, i kinda agree with you on the continuity of the
fragile. I'm really surprised that Bob Ezrin even took
credit for working on it... But anyway, the fragile has its
moments and failures like any other album. I listen to it a
lot more lately.

Any update on this collaberation?? Trents already started
the bullshit release date game nonsense.... i remember
hearing summer 04, now its like 4th qaurter 04... i think
i'll jizz when i see an advertisment/soundsamples/website
activity.

i'm sure that you've already searched for this. Youve
already dug up a couple of nin topics as it is; however,
reznor fired devine. He want's to ripp off joy division now.
not Skinhy puppy...or MYABE he's listened to the new puppy
and noticed it was crap, and now believes he'll re-try his
old synthpop-ish abulm layout schema.

Everyone seems so upset that Devine could possibly have
something to do with the new NIN album. But know what?
REZNOR CALLED DEVINE! DEAL WITH IT!

Jesus people. Relax. I think the Devine + Reznor thing
sounds very cool and interesting. I'm always down when 2
good artists combine their powers to make something. Its
kinda like when those robot tigers all have sex to make up
'voltron'. ya know?

At least Reznor isn't teaming up with The Neptunes.

i agree w/ the stoner. Who the fuck are the neptunes? &
why no AfX Collab with NIN? You think they'll ever tour?
i'd pay cash money to see that yo.
