third time i've seen them.
is it superficial that i can't enjoy music once it gets too popular? i can't connect w/it. on the bus a group of concergoers: he got the red shirt, he got the green shirt, she got the blue shirt. everyone got posters.
anyways, went fully cynical. i really wished i could say they weren't incredible, that the show was anything less than beautiful and gut-blooming. 'no surprises' -- ach. oh deep sigh.

Good music getting popular: still good
Music made for the purpose of appealing to the mases and selling heaps: shit

i can't believe it but i actually sort of relate.. certain songs of theirs i can't get into live or on record anymore cos they're over-popular. it sucks cos they were and in a way still are some of my favorite songs ever made.

i can't say i agree. the only thing i don't like about Radiohead concerts is not being able to get good tickets unless you're the first one on line to get them!
doesn't matter that more people like Radiohead necessarily, it's not like they are top 40, and i've never understood people who only like obscure music JUST BECAUSE it's obscure and they are the only ones that supposidly 'get it'
i am glad they are making $$ and are able to make more and more GOOD music (sometimes it's brilliant). it's when they start putting out CRAP cos they are FAT CATS that i don't like....when/ IF that ever happens i won't be seeing Radiohead anymore, or purchase their albums. i can't imagine it happening.....but it could.

hey, if you stop disliking music because it gets popular, then you never really liked the music just for the music in the first place... well, not mainly anyways... good music is good music, whether it's underground, or on the radio all the time...

i stop liking good music because it was popular in extreme cases like moby. when things are overplayed it's just a natural response (getting sick of it), no matter HOW much you like it. i still like all of radiohead's songs but some i don't love like i used to just because i overplayed it on cd, it was overplayed on the radio, or it just had elements in the song that have limited replay value..

i understand an artist being OVERPLAYED, ie moby, dave matthews, etc....
i agree with that, but i guess i have not reached my limit with Radiohead. and around these parts they hardly EVER play them on the radio....maybe CREEP more than others.
oddly enough it was enjoyable hearing them do CREEP, after not doing it for YEARS at the Radiohead show i was at a couple weeks ago.....it had a nostalgic quality to it!

nod, you're right there... anyone can get sick of music if it's played too much... my point, as I know you understood, was just when people stop liking music just because it sells a million copies or something... just the idea of it getting popular turns people off... that's just stupid!

there's more to it than that. i don't think anyone can entirely isolate 'the music' as a self-containing entity in a void. it exists in a larger context -- like titsworth mentioned, how much something is played is a factor; how popular it is can be a factor (it is, i admit, to me. i can't help it. it feels like it demeans an artist-listener relationship.), how something is packaged, how something is played, song titles (programatic music pre-suggests certain interpretations), who the artist is, how new (or old) a piece of music is -- all these things invariably constitute yr experience of the music, for good + bad.

My problem and subsequent hesitation in seeing them live this time 'round is that HTTT is so sub-par and uninspiring.... Still good and better than most coming out, but such a dramatic and giant step DOWN the ladder of musical evolution....
It's like they got lazy.

It is, I hate to be obvious, all about opinions and perrspective. I don't carre what people think about a band and the music they make until they starrt becoming the thought police and telling me what I can think about it.
I am able to enjoy The Gloaming forr example, in a way that some people I know can't enjoy it, so they don't like that song as much as I do. Does that mean the song is bad because they don't like it? Orr does it mean the song it good because I do like it?

yea isn't it funny how radiohead can sell so well and get no airplay? it's the same here in the US. they're absolutely fucking huge among people 15-40 and their newer songs are rarely on the radio or MTV (from the little time i give either).

Radiohead are a kick ass band... they are able to mix an experimental leaning with kick ass melodies and great hooks... thus they are able to garner respect from critics, and sell well... Hail to the Thief is a kick ass album full of great, interesting melodies, and great hooks... along with a little of their electronic elements mixed in...
