whats gone wrong with electronic music?

maybe its just me, but is anyone else feeling dissatisfied
by the current electronic music scene? i don't bother buying
most of the warp albums anymore cos they dont do anything
for me: why the fuck would i want to buy an album by beans?
plaid hasn't changed in years- autechre has slipped into the
territory for chin-strokers, squarepusher has lost his
groove and aphex is MIA. who's gonna sort out this mess, are
there any up-and-coming artists who can kick-start things
again?

What the hell is a "Chin-stroker"?

Nah, you're right, I know what you mean. It's not as good at
the moment as it was a few years back, at least. Orbital,
Underworld and the Chemical Brothers have lost it, FSOL
haven't released a truly 'electronic' record in years (just
wait for the new one next year, though), and what happened
to Photek?
Hmmm.

In an artsy-fartsy way?I don't think that's the typical
Autechre-listener. I think Ae, Sqp and Afx is as good as
ever (except the last Afx-single). And there are new talents
like Chris Clark and Sote on warp, wich make excellent
music.

offline purlieu from Leeds (United Kingdom) on 2003-08-18 05:32 [#00826140]

Ae are certainly more... thinking music than before, I think
it's fair to say. Very abstract and so on, as we all know. I
think they're still excellent, though.
Never liked Squarepusher. And AFX hasn't had a proper
release since Drukqs, so I don't think it's fair to judge
what he's up to at the moment. I'm hoping the next album
will build on the little experiments he's put out on the MEN
label.

but with advent of broadband porn i don't think we are gonna
see an aphex album for some time, so i will have to be
content with plug-in monkeys who shitspray the scene with
piss-poor albums: respect to all the artists who are in a
lull but fuck all the young tampon eating cunts who never
produced a good track in their lives...

what does "MIA" mean? ' _ '

i don't know about new releases... 26 Mixes for Cash was
pretty great imo but that was nothing new... i still have
good surprises in electronica but i don't care about
newness, i buy new albums as well as old ones so even if all
new things are crap i still have lots and lots of older
electronica to check =)

i'm turning more towards rock and lowercase/minimalisitc
though lately. but that's just a period, it happens.

well Richard Devine is pretty good, along with Mira Calix
and Chris Clark. Try listening to some other artists rather
than just the well known ones... also try artists from other
labels, Susumu Yokota is imho the best person making
Electronic music at the moment.

I was just writing the same thing over on WATMM!
Yeah, there's some decent music floating about, but nothing
that really grabs/inspires me these days - It's worse if
you've been into this music for a long time cos I remember
when every album on warp was worth buying.
Now I'd be lucky if I buy one a year - In fact, it's
probably less than that now.
There's too much insane/glitchey stuff for me now, and not
enough real music.

Yeah I was going to say the same thing as Neo, if you're
looking for what you call 'real music' you're in the wrong
genre to being with.

i don't understand why everyone is so eager for change. i
don't think there's anything wrong with the style now. you
are probably just trying to figure out what you are into and
you tried idm for a while. idm might not be what ur looking
for.

Ghostdog - FSOL are releasing a new album next year. It'll
actually by FSOL (unlike The Isness, which was Amorphous
Androgynous), and is supposedly going to contain samples of
The Isness, only mixed up and put together in an electronic
way. Then there'll be another Amorphous Andrognyous album
(kind of like The Isness 2), and before those we have
another single from The Isness (Divinity).
Oh, and there should be a DVD sometime.

Well I see the potential of electronic music, I've been into
warp since I was 13/14 years old, used to buy every release
religiously - and I'm still listening to those albums today,
so are my friends - There's was so much great music being
made back then - Now I feel a lot of it is watered down by
style issues...
I do love a lot of the recent stuff, definetly, but I'll
usually just buy something, listen to it a few times, then
forget about it - I haven't found anything/anyone in recent
years that can really compair to the classics from Aphex,
FSOL, Autechre, Black Dog, etc...
That's the way I feel anyway.

I still love FSOL!
I look forward to their new album a LOT! They seem
completely unphased by everything that's happening in the
rest of the electronic scene.

well i've had 8 years with electronic music, and believe me
I know what i like, compare something like "my red hot car"
to big loada and you see what i mean. artists work seems to
have slipped considerably over the last few years: warp
albums used to be events but now they just slip out, sell a
few copies, get mixed reviews and get mp3'd to death. only
aphex releases get me excited nowdays and they are few and
far between.
rephlex is good but usually lack the depth of their old warp
counterparts. skam is quiet at the moment, leaf always seem
to be slightly off the mark, worm interface has vanished,
and planet-mu is to electronic music what limp bizkit is to
metal. a big breakthrough needs to come soon or it will all
die on the vine...

totally undestand where you guys are coming from - i would
say try ceephax - exidy tours on firstcask , its
squarepushers lil borther let loose on his equipment by the
sound of it and it kicks royal arse . the new chris clark is
ok (managed to get a copy on friday)and for anyone wishing
for the ae style sound arovane - icol diston is a great
example of this sound

Fortunately for me, the latest Boards of Canada,
Squarepusher (Go Plastic) and esepecially Autechre have
impressed the hell outta me. My problem is that I'm just
not interested in the latest additions to the roster. They
need to sign something exciting like Radian. But alas, they
are now with Thrill Jockey.

I think warp need to get back to the roots and push really
interesting innovative electronic music without careing
about sales and image so much - That's how they used to be -
The Artificial Intelligence series was a labour of love, it
didn't sound even slightly marketable at the time.
These days Warp just remind me of that '97 trip hop phase -
I don't know why, I find the music from Ninja Tune/Mo Wax
pretty dull and uninspiring on the whole, but it seems like
Warp has been heading in that direction for the last half
decade or so.
They need to take some chances and sign some real
cutting-edge talent to the label... Forget about the rest of
the music industry and just put out what they believe in.
I get the feeling all the major players in the scene are too
picky and style consious nowadays.

jingle if all you base your enjoyment of electronic music on
iare warp artists then forget about it - do a bit more
exploring - rephlex are hot at the moment - ai are hot
planet mu are pretty good , alot of people on this site
judging by their record bags judge electronic music thru the
narrow margins of what warp put out - if you were really
into it and you explored more and opened up more you
wouldn't be bored no more

no but it's generally true - for example this thread - is
electronic music dead (then goes on to discuss warp artists
soley) there is so much great music around at the moment
(including soe newer warp stuff) people should spread their
wings a bit and sample other things

my answer is no - like most record labels it still releases
good records - BUT it's not the godhead and it's a bit much
to expect it to always come up to your personal expectations
- for me anyway they haven't released anything as exciting
as the bug or asa chang this year

I don't think there is anything wrong with the scene, i just
think people need to do more themselves if they are not
happy with it and then maybe they will spend more time being
productive then sitting around moping about the fact that
they are ultimatly bored from sitting on their arses.

offline J Swift from United Kingdom on 2003-08-18 12:08 [#00826796]

Yeah the scene is great - I've never known it to be
healthier to be honest - But I'm just not too excited about
anything these days - There is decent music being made, but
there's not been anything that's blown me away, or that I'll
prolly be listening to in a few years time that I've bought
in the last few years...
I'm sure there will be some new direction/innovation at some
point in the future, maybe a new label or artist who really
inspires everyone, cos that's why the scene was so great in
the first place, everyone was vibeing off each other and
breaking new ground...
But Warp, yeah, they need to sort it out - The scene does
kind of benefit from having a Godhead style label like that
- It's just that Warp haven't released anything too
ground-breaking for a long time IMO... Their output just
isn't as musical, interesting or evolving as it used to be.
I dig Mu and Rephlex, but they're mainly releasing crazy
dance music, not enough of the home listening stuff for me.
Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I want melody and emotion,
interesting sounds and samples in electronic music - There's
nothing I've found in recent years that sounds as fresh as
FSOL's old ambient stuff, or RJ's early/mid 90's output...

electronic music, just like most music being produced
nowadays.. is becoming much too soulless.. i know that's how
it's always been.. but it seems like the trend is to become
as cold and heartless and possible while using only weird
noises and no melody.. not that there can't be good music
made this way, but it just seems like no one is willing to
make something with any emotion put into it anymore..

ahh.. i don't mean it's always been like that.. but people
have always criticized electronic musicians for making
soulless music.. now it's becoming like they are writing
music for stoned robots to listen to..
