i've just downloaded Opera 7, but i'm not too sure about
installing it. i read that Opera is a bit faster than IE,
but that's about it. Are there any other pro's and con's
that i should be aware of?

Besides being open source (i think) I find opera to be just
all around better than IE or netscape. I have never tried
Mozilla (which opera is based off of, I believe) but i hear
good things about that as well.

Pros
- nice interface (I find the new version of IE has seemed to
borrow some ideas from Mozilla/opera)
- Free/open source in direct competition with microsoft

As for being faster than IE, i am not discerning enough to
tell, but i would like to think so.

just my opinion, but dont be afraid to give it a try

Opera is not based on Mozilla at all. Mozilla is open source
and Opera is proprietary.

Mozilla kicks my head's ass. I couldn't live without the
popup blocking, tabbed browsing, mouse gestures - oh wait,
Opera has those too. Well Mozilla is free, open source,
standards compliant and constantly improving, nyah nyah.

One thing that utterly annoys me about Opera is that you
can't save your bookmarks as an html file to import them to
Mozilla. You have to get a third party app like
bookmarkpriest to do that.

thanks fleetmouse, had my facts a bit wrong there- Mozilla
it is, then. Long live open source, and people who think
they know what they are talking about, but really dont!

Firebird is basically Mozilla Lite - it uses the same page
rendering engine but has a different application framework
and toolkit. I find it's not as solid as Mozilla but it'd
probably run better on an older system.

I've been using opera for quite some time, and I would NEVER
EVER even concider going back to either Internet Explorer or
Netscape. It's only after you've started using Opera, you
realize what crappy applications IE & NS are. Especially IE.

opera is w3c compliant. so its good for making websites
under, unfortunately the chances are, a lot of websites will
look stupid under it cause they werent built to w3c
standards.

i've heard knowledgable computer nerds speak quite
favourably of Opera

thats gotta give it some credibility

ie is nice for easy link clicking :P
i don't like opera because i had to refresh the page alot,
and i was never sure if i saw updated content or not.
thats the only reason its faster than ie, it stores
everything so the page pops up right away.

at one point i couldn't even get it to download the latest
content from a forum. i opened ie and there it was, new
threads and all. well, there's probably an option for it
somewhere but i wont bother :P

Maybe you meant the "Netscape era"?

Well I find it an annoying software, where nothing is
working as expected. Don't ask me for details, I am lazy to
install it again, and tell you why I uninstalled it after 1
day of use.
