Independent, it means they're too cool to live in the
basement with their parents.

Except that most indie labels are satellites for the
majors.. ie. developed/funded by them to either test the
waters for a certain band or genre, or to fob you off into
thinking your icons are outside 'the system' etc.

take a deep breath!

indie rock used to mean "we are unsigned, or signed to an
INDIEpendant label, bra"
then allofasudden it is so freaktastic hip to be INDIE that
every cat grows his hair to his earlobes and bangs in his
eyes and wears t shirts that are too small and sings real
sad songs, real loud and melodic, and lives on peoples'
couches til he finds a girlfriend to support him

but THE STROKES are not indie NOR THE WHITE STRIPES
goddamnit, not even MODEST MOUSE cause they got signed to
epic
but who, no capital WHO fucking cares?
there's a lot of cute indie people. some are real assholes.
thank you for your time.

Interesting...
What label is the parent of Kranky, or Thrill Jockey, or
Constellation? I mean it: I just don't know, but I would
like to.

Indy is a fictional archaeologist circa 1920's. He was
involed in all kinds of sticky situations, but always
managed to get himself (and his crazy old dad) out of
trouble with the help of his trust whip.

constellation and kranky have no ties to major labels at
all, but say for example, up records (modest mouses old
label etc)or matador(pavement, arab strap etc)(matador was
distributed by capitol for a while, and both are
manufactured by wea which is one of the biggest
manufacturers of music as well as emi music)

so just look on the bottom of a cd and if you see the wea or
emi text on it near the hole of the cd, its not completely
independent in all of the processes, its true that its not
advertised by the majors but the distribution allows it to
be heard in more places than say a completely indie label
like kranky, mush, constellation, young god etc.

It's weird though. You can go to Best Buy and find certain
artists on Constellation and/or Kranky, like Godspeed You!
Black Emperor, but you won't find an equally well known band
on Matador like Arab Strap. I guess a lot has to do on the
retail end with buyers and whatnot.

it's all very localized also. I think around here you would
find arab strap on the shelf at your best buy. I think you
might have a hard time finding GSYBE! though.
or not. I don't know, I am a musical pirate... .arrr!
