IDM dying?

I kinda noticed how the discussions lately really haven't
been around electronic music that much. We find more
interest in discussing bands and boobs than the good ol'
aphex and squarepusher-threads ...it's not that I don't like
that, it's just something i wanted people to talk about...

maybe it's actually just me who has lost interest in
discussing IDM - who knows...

no, but every IDM thing/release/artist has already been
discussed here i think..

whenever there's a new release coming up you see people
starting to talk about it again, unfortunately that isn't
very often :(

think about it:
-afx is aping mezbow and the already tired ragga/jungle
hybrid
-autechre are practically repeating their last album
-squarepusher isn't coming up with anything worth listening
to
-boc have disappeared while they reinvent themselves
-plaid just released an album people here are disappointed
by (haven't heard it myself)
-vsnares hasn't put an album out yet this month, or has he?
it's not like they get talked about longer than a few days,
maybe 2 or 3 weeks maximum. talk about no staying power.
-mu-ziq people are too scared to check out, not that it's
REALLY worth it.. his last album was passable but not nearly
his best work
-everything else isn't popular enough (yet) to get long
threads about. believe me, people try to discuss things, but
people don't want to participate because they either don't
listen to anything outside of the usual 4 warp artists or
they don't feel comfortable talking about it much for some
reason.

Right now, 20% of the first 100 topics on xltronic are IDM
related.

I don't like the term braindance either

if someone asks me what kind of music I like I just say
"alternative electronic music". It's not as easy on the
tongue than IDM or braindance but it's most suitable IMO.

*correction: plaid's new album just LEAKED, it's not out
yet. but who cares, once people download these albums 3
months in advance, if they don't absolutely love it they
don't feel like they have to buy it. so "basically" it's
out.

That said it all for me.

i think idm is dead the same way rock was dead a few years
ago.

it goes in cycles. artists draw off each other, and when
the initial period of HOLY SHIT THIS SHIT IS AWESOME wears
off, the posers go home, and the good guys sit back and
reevaluate.

you are seeing the product of this in rock music now with
screamo and a need breed of pop-punk. It's a delayed
response to typical pop music. As the original bands become
played out and loose steam, rock will "die" again and the
good bands will just hang around.

idm is 5 years ahead of the rock curve, so you have a rut
and reinvention. Music never dies, it recycles.

idm, rock, etc. doesn't die, people just get tired of being
fed the same crap. no one here HAS to restrict themselves to
warp's biggest artists, but they choose to out of fear of
wasting their time/money on something they might not like
(though it's really easy to get good recommendations from
people who know a lot about music and like to help people
discover something they'll enjoy).

well i agree with everyone saying how music goes in cycles..
but you can also look at as it dying (like i think it's
doing now) and later being reincarnated into something new
and different.

I would say that 'idm' as such and under that name is dying.
People that I know who were into it are now looking for
more party music, be it acid, hiphop, hardcore jungle etc.
It's a new phase, frankly I'm pretty happy about it. The
genre may lose popularity and 'die' but the producers will
not, they'll just shift around and start making other stuff.
The whole breakcore scene is very 'post-idm' I think, along
with a lot of people who went and got into electro and are
now getting out because of teh death of electroclash. Every
artistic movement is finite. Especially once it gets a
name.

i think things have to grow up and expand - id m was such a
terrible term anyway - the bug etc which is brilliant wsn't
idm nor was lory d -
you've got to think is idm a way of life or just a way of
labelling

i dunno, 'idm' isnt really giving us much to talk about
lately..

i think the main artists who have been discussed extensively
until now are starting to slow down a bit, and though there
are many impressive lesser known artists at this point,
there are no real outstanding ones that excite people the
same way aphex and his ilk first did, probably because the
genre is entering its phase where the majority of new
artists are still replicating the sound of the few
innovators. it'll kick up again in a few years, dont worry.

i started listening to IDM through Aphex Twin and
Squarepusher of course, and now that I'm getting a tad fed
up with them, I'm starting to discover different musicians
like Jega, Otto Von Schirach, Kid606, Funki Porcini - I
think I have to agree with BlatantEcho that all music goes
thru cycles with low and high points, but when you think
about it, IDM has always been fairly underground, at least
here in the States. But i also agree with titsworth that it
is a good idea for us to start listening to music other than
the big Warp deities, because honestly, there's a lot of
great stuff out there if you're willing to search. The IDM
scene is still here - except now I think it's eventually
going to consist mainly of the true underground musicians,
the ones who toil day and night on their comps, mixing
boards, sequencers or whatever just to crank out something
that they hope might get the attention of their idols. And
of course, they don't, because their idols are obviously too
busy or really don't give a shit. The IDM scene IS here -
just look around you.
