IS MY OS ABOUT TO CRASH?

Damn. First my soundcard, now this. My IE is running
horribly sluggish - and the connection's stable and at the
same speed its always been. And now whenever I try to shut
down or restart my comp, the comp freezes up. But it's fine
doing everything else. This IE sluggishness is REALLY
starting to bother me.... every 15-20 seconds it just halts
for a second, even as I'm posting this.

I've cleaned all spyware off my comp, no BHOs are operating,
and i did a virus scan online last night and nothing sour
turned up. DAMN IT! It's taking me 5 minutes just to write
this because of this glitch.

I'm on WinME on an HP pavilion mx70. Should i start backing
up everything and change my OS immediately? if so, how do i
go about this whole process and getting back to normal
again?

windows ME is the worst O/S ever released upon humanity.

if you can't get windows 2000 or XP, install 98se.

if you can't get that find an old copy of Windows 3.1...
anything is better than ME.

just kidding about 3.1... but, ME does suck.

it doesn't sound like the worm at all.

The worm caused your computer to restart itself. He is just
saying that IE is sluggish, and when he tries to shut down,
it locks up.
It's probably WinME decaying and collapsing under it's
hulking weight of bad programming.

damn it! i got dc'd - but every time i start up my comp is
running FINE. it did this bit-

INTERNET EXPLORER WAS CAUSED AN ERROR IN KRNL368.EXE

IF YOU CONTINUE TO EXPERIENCE PROBLEMS, TRY RESTARTING YOUR
COMPUTER.

Strange..... it's fine right now.....

indeed. could it be that my OS crumbling to smithereens
contributed to my soundcard becoming disabled?

(it appears as disabled device now in device manager)

you always could go linux. i just did last week, and it's
surprisingly easy to install, and with KDE it looks really
good.

SuSE 8.2

Just in case you have them, try uninstalling Kazaa and
Soulseek. They're both potential system killers.

if you were asking me, then yes, linux is just a different
operating system than windows.

it works on PCs.

however, be aware that it is a different opperating
system and software that was made to run on windows may or
may not run on linux. probably not

that being said, it was a snap for me to install SuSE on my
computer. it recognised all of my hardware except the
modem... which was a piece of shit modem anyway.

offline Oddioblender from Fort Worth, TX (United States) on 2003-08-13 16:09 [#00820449]

well that's probably not a good idea since most of my
software (Music software especially) is Windows-based.

what are the costs on other versions of Windows?
(preferrably right before or after WinME) I want the closest
version to it so i don't risk losing software.

hardware failure?

Linux isn't a viable alternative for someone who has been
using a Windows desktop all their life, unless that person
has time to invest in doing a lot of learning. It wouldn't
be advisable to install on a machine that's in regular use
for work and such like without being familiar with the OS
first.

i've been using windows all my life. until last tuesday
that is.

but, yeah, i know exactly what you mean. if you are
currently using your machine to do specialized tasks, like
create music, then switching to a completely new OS wouldn't
be a good idea.

however, making the switch to linux wasn't nearly as
difficult as i was afraid it might be.

windows 2000 you can prolly find a better price online if
you take a second to search.

and, software problems could (but probably aren't) cause
hardware problems. what's more likely happening is that the
sofware is malfunctioning, and that is causing it to look
like the hardware is fucking up.

offline Oddioblender from Fort Worth, TX (United States) on 2003-08-13 16:19 [#00820468]

so, did my OS fucking itself in the ass lead to my soundcard
failure?

let me reiterate what happened for those who didn't see my
post a couple of nights ago. i had mixed two very
high-quality sound files together, and i played the result,
and it was playing just fine. then i closed one of the sound
files (the one that wasn't playing) and my comp froze. I
restart, let scandisk run, and voila, my sound is gone. No
volume control, no noise, no nothing. The volume bar on my
keyboard doesn't even work. And bastardized WInME keeps
telling me i have no sound device. And only a DISABLED
DEVICE appears in my device manager under the sound drivers.
And the best drivers are apparently already installed.

that could be the whole problem to begin with. because i
figured if my soundcard was about to die, it would have
given me some sort of warning, like some breakup in the
audio or noise or some shit. and it's not like I was PLAYING
two files at once - I was simply closing one as another was
playing. That seems like a retarded glitch for Microsoft
Sound Recorder. It didn't make sense.

i really don't know much about you're situation, but i'd
hazzard a guess that there is nothing physically wrong with
your soundcard. and that it is a driver / OS issue.

then reformat your hard drive(s) to clear off all the crap

If you have a spare hard drive it might be as well ghosting
your current drive onto it (remove backed up data like mp3s,
wavs etc first so you can get away with a smaller backup
drive) - so you have a "working" (as much as ME can be said
to be working!) backup of your OS which you can ghost back
in the event of failure. (Or get a new hard drive to use for
your new OS and don't wipe the existing one)

Installing an OS from a totally blank drive is a worry,
especially if you can't go back to how it was. You panic,
get that hot, stressed and on-the-verge-of-abject-terror
feeling.

It's also vital to make sure you know exactly what hardware
you have so you can get the right drivers for them for your
new OS. Win 2000 and XP are pretty likely to have most
drivers by default, but there's always that one outlandish
soundcard or freaky modem that's not got drivers included,
and without it your life isn't complete. And of course you
forgot to note down the make, model and other important
details so you can't track down the drivers online...
