Who sends demos to Rephlex?

What's wrong with people sending their demo's to Rephlex.
Let people live the dream. Their trying to do something with
hteir music. I don't see why you feel the need to state that
Rephlex don't listen to them? Who cares? Why does it bother
you so much? Did you send a demo to Rephlex and not get a
reply?

I've sent a demo cd to rephlex and warp and think it was
probably a waste of time. I agree with promo's stats, I
can't believe that out of the thousands of demos they have
recieved in the past three years, none of them were better
than Transllusion - Don't be afraid of Evolution and other
weaker Rephlex releases...

At least with smaller record labels there is a chance you
will recieve feedback or at least a rejection message (I've
recieved both from other labels).

planet-mu's your best bet, but i think mike looks for
something specific in your music, so if your shits similar
to other mu stuff then i guess u got a good chance

I sent a demo to rephlex years ago and got an email reply
saying thanks for it and it had been listened to....

Oh and...

>cylob - used to live with aphex

Signed through demo tape before they met.

>ed dmx - ?

Signed through demo tape, the answer phone message is at the
end of his first rephlex album.

Also Mike P was signed through a demo tape. Well a whole
stack fo them.

But all those examples were years ago- before so many people
made music and hence fewer demos were sent in. Now everyone
does it, they've probably got far more demos than they could
ever possibly listen to.

Oh yeah wasn't trying to prove a point just correcting what
someone else had said.....

Back in the day (chugs on pipe, feels the warmth of his
slippers on his feet) rephlex could do no wrong with
inovative release after release (I think they peaked during
the lelia, virtual farmer period of 98/99) but now mmmmmm.
Its good but it aint quite right.

but this just reflects the scene as whole this aint a
localised rephlex phemeneneneneomenon.

giginger,

Nothing is wrong with sending a demo to Rephlex. Its just a
complete fantasy to expect anything from it. You have to be
stupid not to realise the obvious. But do it 'ginginger' if
that is your dream .... dream on.

Oh in respect of DMX they'd actually previously heard his
music from a record that had come out on another label.

I'll say it again just one more time I am just pointing out
the status quo this is not an attack on Rephlex.

If I could speak to people, not that I wish to brainwash
them to my thinking, it would be a lot easier to convey
certain arguments.

Promo, owning a functional brain of your own would be the
minimum requirement for you to even consider trying to
brainwash anyone else.

Anyone noticed that their demo spiel has changed since the
site overhaul?

"a&r:
send us your demo if you think rephlex is the best label for

your music.
send it on audio cd if you can.
send a variety of music for us.
send your best tracks.
send tracks you thought up yourself, that only sound like
you!
send only music, write your details on the disk; don't send

letters or photos or gifts or IDM... we want braindance!
remember that we like elements such as sound, rhythm, melody

and mood in music.
we regret we don't really have time or resources to reply to

you but rest assured we do listen to everything eventually.

if your music is unique and original and fulfilling, we'll
probably sign you up, or pass it to somebody who will!
cheers :)"

Perhaps Grant et all read our little discussion earlier and

changed it accordingly, eh? ;)

Ceri JC,

I think its unlikely Grant was reading this board. I knew
that within the broader scheme of things that if they were
really blown away by something they'd pass it on. But lets
be clear they clearly aren't signing up people through this
old fashioned and pretty ineffective means.

is SKAM a label notorious for 'poaching' as Warp and Rephlex
are? I'll probably be sending them a demo in the coming
months if not. I think my sound is more SKAM than it is
Rephlex.

theo himself,

Its seem really the only way that new artists come about is
through being recognised on other labels. I think its pretty
rare for a label to become really established and cool
without it coming out of the Warp/Rephlex axis. I can think
of only a few, Spymania springs to mind but they've just
about had it now and I don't think their releases have
really stood the test of time or have they? Any other
labels? I suppose some of the defunct labels like Rising
High - they use to have Wagon Christ and The Black Dog on
them.

lets face it, there is a hell of a lot of shit out their in
our scene so it is not surprising that rephlex ignores some
gems- they turned down BOC for shits sake- there is no harm
in sending in a demo cos you would be very happy to get
signed, and if they ignore it nevermind just keep sending
them/making music regardless, its only cost you a cd-r. also
you may feel down if you don't make the grade, but its a
tough business and you will always get knock-backs so get
used to it, even established artists get treated like
shit...

Rephlex just do what they always were going to do, release
music that they themselves personally love. Odds are that
won't be the current trend in music and noone is making good
old acid any more.

jingle,

Rephlex turned downed BOC! Holy crap. I guess quite a few
labels must have. I did wondered how BOC came about all the
same. That really does make the point home and clear that
you could have the best demo on the earth and it still
wouldn't make any difference to a label such as Rephlex. I
think the problem also is that demos do require some time to
appreciate whether they're genuine shit or any good.

'mark one' and 'plasticman' were signed thorugh demo....

I really believe that they don't bother to listen to demos.
And in a way they probably find it a chore. If through day
to day activity such as general listening, references, word
of mouth etc etc, they find someone they like they'll just
approach them. They know that no one in their right mind and
from a cred point of view would refuse a deal with them.

Mark one was probably signed too, I mean imagine having to
sift through tons of demos and spotting a demo named Mark
One", would you think "now this could be interesting" or
would you rather think "whoever the fuck would come up with
a lame name such as this can't possibly offer me interesting
music"?

in this sensitive moment i'll type few q
uotes from THE WIRE magazine rehlex/aphex cover story
november issue '03...(www.thewire.co.uk)

....about the future of rpehlex label

"12 years down the line, i want our record label to be like
warner brothers - i really don't want us to be seen as a
dance label" - - - -
......afx about the messagebards

" my message boards, i don't even undesrtand what they're on
about, they heav their own private languages and acronyms.
i've been banned from message boards of mine, kicked off
straight away for winding up other people-which is ironic" -
- - - AFX

....afx about the demos

we try and work less off demos and concentrate more on
seeking out things.....it fucks you over listening to demos,
the hit rate is so low. i try to remember when i had no
money and nobody would listen to my music. when we started
the label, i vowed i would listen to every single
demo......nowadays we got more demos than we sell records"

Wilson-Claridge about the demos/production

"everybody has access to everything.it's easier. but the
good-to-rubbish ratio is the same. beacause there's more
music being made, it stands to reason that there is more
good music being made"

_______________________________

issue later , on the corrections page

Rephlex Records would like to clarify that despite RDJ's
comment that he is no longer able to listen to every demo
that gets sent in, the label's A&R department will still
spin through everything they receive.

.....now some things can be clear and some new theories can
be made.i never sent anuthing to anyone but meho and are
starting the label, more info soon.....

hey promo, i read your posts and i understand what you
say..it can be very frustrating to send your music to
someone you think can appreciate and then discover your tape
is actually filling a hole in the floor.. and i agree with
you when you say that people could stop sending demos to
rephlex because its a waste of time. this probably means
that everyone has got to find his own space by creating it :
i mean you should do like rdj did, that is start your own
label, find people that you feel you are on the same tree,
break your back playing round to people lthat mostly hate
what you do...and then finally, maybe, if you got talent you
will start to have some satisfaction...and probably you will
then receive demos that you will hear at first, but then
when you will have to choose what record release, you will
probably choose your mate's stuff or music by people that
you admired...im doing it too llong
bye

I been listening to your tracks today and yesterday. Quite
pleasant I might add. Nice Drexciya feel in there on one
track in particular. Been quite enjoying them. As ol' Vibert
says 'I luv acid'.

For the mo I just enjoy making my tracks and getting
pleasure from creating music and posting it here (on
Xltronic). Don't have any overwealming desire to promote it
to labels (not fussed either way). That said I do like
playing my tracks live as I'm sure you do. Getting stuff out
on labels is really a badge (look I'm on xyz) not that I
hold it against those who are on xyz (good 2 them I say :D).
I'm open to whatever people want to do essentially. As much
good demo artists on the net with free tracks as there are
label artists these days anyways.

send demos to who you want, just make sure its good enough
to be on those labels. then one day when youre signed, you
can say "so and so" turned me down and have a laugh because
youre putting out records anyway.
