My laptop has a built-in wireless adapter, I just need to
get a router that has both wires and wireless before I can
take advantage of that. I can't wait.

what's the range of that?

offline elusive from detroit (United States) on 2003-08-11 12:02 [#00817733]

~ 20miles with 2 yagis pointed at each other (14+dB gains)
depending, (theoretical value, although frezzzno effeckT and
climate and line of site all taken into extreme
consideration)

but 10miles usually on a line of site shot.

the other ones are omni (360deg antennas) and the big yagis
are VERY directional.

but a nice 5dB omni hooked to yer access point gives a good
mile of range if in the open easily.

it's not any/much more expensive than a wired network. so,
if you're planning on setting up a network in your home or
business. i'd definately go wireless.

and, if one or more of your computers is a laptop then it's
a definate.

offline Duble0Syx from Columbus, OH (United States) on 2003-08-11 12:57 [#00817793]

The only trouble with wireless is that it is a lot slower
than wired. You can't watch dvd's over a wireless network.
Even if your wireless router can output that fast, most card
don't recieve/send stuff fast enough. Though you can easily
play mp3's.

offline elusive from detroit (United States) on 2003-08-11 13:49 [#00817872]

uhhh why would you be streaming DVDs?

does your laptop have 5.1 ? ?? ? ? ??

streaming divx dvd rips are just fine.

11mbits, actual ~ 5-6mbits is plenty of bandwidth.

offline Duble0Syx from Columbus, OH (United States) on 2003-08-11 13:52 [#00817876]

well, I'm just saying your not going to be doing anything
that has a heavy bandwidth load over a wireless connection
is all. And if I were streaming a dvd the laptop wouldn't
need to have 5.1, the destination I am streaming it too
would. But I do plan on using my laptops wireless thing. I
have enough other computers for dvd's. I was pointing out
the small downside of wireless networking.

you could always overclock your wireless connecton for more
speed.

isn't that potentialy dangerous to the hardware?

maybe 5ghz if you watercool

pushing my OC3 home-lan backbone over wifi (155mbits)

sounds like a lot of work. Not sure about cooling methods.
I don't know much about wireless networking. I here you can
overclock your cpu also, but htat can be dangerous.

i wear a gas mask at all times while im surfing the net @ my
pc.

you mean any circuit board in the machine? I fried the LED
on an old piece of shit and it smoked and I accidently
inhaled a bit. I can't say it smelled to good, but I am not
dead.
I think tomorrow I'll go looking for a used combo router
thats wireless and wired.

cool. A little puff of smoke came from the reset button on
the LED, and apparently a circuit blew out. A piece is
sticking out. I reconnected the wire backwards and turned
it on and poof! I was like, "oops." That was the end of
that machine, though it was only a 486.
