i went to that huge concert in Toronto last wednesday
night
it was to boost the cities economy, especially the tourism
sectors, after the big scare about SARS
i think CNN called it "SARS-stock" or something

anyways, 400 and something thousand people came... it was
pretty enormous (definitely the biggest concert in canadian
history)

i could only see a small fraction of the people there at
once, people were just crowded all the way to the horizon...
i could only get a sense of how much bigger it was than the
small part i could see by noticing how far the speaker
towers continued off into the distance
it was held on what used to be an air force air field, so
theres plenty of space

anyways, to the actual music!

i only went to the evening show, so i missed the smaller
acts that performed int he afternoon (tea party, flaming
lips, who cares, etc)... and we actually missed the first
performer of the evening section, justin timberlake... but i
didn't mind

i got there as The Guess Who were performing "American
Woman", they sounded pretty good for old timers ;)

next was Rush, who feature some guy who is supposed to be
the best drummer in the world.. ive forgotten his name, but
needless to say, he was very impressive, although it was
limited somewhat by the sound quality, which was not great..
you could clearly hear the delay between teh many many
speakers, and the sound ended up sort of garbled and not
clear..... and it was really inconsistent too... every now
and then the trebble would suddenly be overwhelming.... or
there'd be these really slow swells of very deep bass that
seemed to have no connection to the music

next........ AC/DC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
AC/DC and the stones seemed to be the performers most people
were really waiting for, so people got pretty into it at
this point.... they were amazing!
Angus Young, their lead guitarist, was really the highlight
of the whole show for me... he was amazing! i love the way
he performs on stage.. he had so much energy it was
impossible for the

he had so much energy it was impossible for the crowd not to
catch some of it
he really got into it, went crazy w/ his guitar (of course
there was a lot of very cool guitar stuff going on).... and
part way through their set, he went into a strip tease..
stripping down to his boxers, which featured a big maple
leaf on it
the rest of the band didn't really get much of my attention
to be honest...
then.....
........the Rolling Stones
obviously the most anticipated performers.. by this time,
some people were starting to move towards the exits
(planning to lessen the wait they were expecting when
several hundred thousand people try to leave at the same
time).... this gave us a chance to move closer to the stage
it was pretty cool seeing the Stones perform.... justin
timberlake come on stage after a couple songs and helped out
on one song, and he looked pretty pathetic compared to Mick
Jagger..... and im not just saying that cus i dont like
justin timberlake..... seeing them perform side by side,
justin was clearly struggling to keep up with Mick, and kept
looking at him to lead and trying desperately to follow his
moves.... i guess he didn't have a choreographer to plan out
what he'd do this time or something
also, the stones had some surprisingly sexually themed
visuals going on the many many screens that are necessary
when most ppl in the audience are too far to see the
stage.... it involved a naked cartoon woman riding on a pin
that was driven through a tongue, part of the rolling
stones' logo or whtaever it is (u know, the big mouth
symbol)... anyways it was surprising thats all
there was plenty of REAL nudity too... many topless girls,
and just plain hot partially clothed ones too

i digress

then Angus Young joined the stones on stage to perform
another amazing guitar solo...... wow, i liked AC/DC and
Angus before, but this show really made me want to get into
them

anyways the stones were cool, it was good too see "legends"
like that perform live before they die..... but AC/DC really
stole t

but AC/DC really stole the show for me

it was very dusty too... and hot... and by the end,
dirty.... and there was much marijuana smoked... and lots
of people were treated for dehydration (obviously)... by the
end of the night the ground was covered with empty plastic
bottles...

Could you actually see the stage, or was it too far?

yes, but only for a few seconds at a time, between the heads
of those in front of me....
when we moved up, when teh stones were playing, we could see
more clearly... it was like having bad seats at an ordinary
sized concert

i cant believe how far behind us, and to the sides, teh
crowd was stretched out.. most people were far worse off
than where i was

they had 50-something big screens set up for people to look
at... it showed a mix of on stage stuff and shots of the
crowd, and the occasional computer graphics

I really like that thing Angus Young does with his mouth.
Kinda like what a fish out of water does, but more like
someone w/ Tourettes Syndrome.

Man, I would have killed to be there. There was well over
half the population of all of Nova Scotia there, it must
have been insane in the membrane. Spectacular lineup, too. I
heard the Port-0-Potties were also top of the line. That's
important.

The Stones can put out all the mediocre music they want, but
they'll still be the uber-cool.

port-o-potties

yeah the stones were cool.....
