I'm glad you people seem to be getting into this record and
because I love you very much I've tried to answer some of
your questions.

> How did you get all the screams?

I just asked a few friends to mail me screams.

> I thought the screams were supposed to be the result of
electro-sexual
> stimulation?

I think the idea came about on this list? Nautillis made the
most amazing 'two guys trying their electro-shock-vibrator
for the first time' scene which I chucked some cheesy music
over and used near the start of the track.

> The screams are from mates and other artist - including
Aaron and CapK and
> others.
Yeah Aaron sent a cool long nasty scream which forms the
build up at the end of the swingle singers section. Capitol
K never screamed for me but a full list of screamers is
printed in the album notes - what don't mp3's come with
album notes?

> I was so impressed when the chamber music kicks in, is it
sampled?"
Yeah it's the swingle singers - weird German folks who sing
Bach in a Jazz kind of way!?!? - I don't usually sample huge
chunks like that but it's just to perfect a piece not to
use!

> So Leafy, was this dirt cheap to make?
Err.... Well I made it with the same kind of equipment that
most people use. My studio is my bedroom so not much expense
there. The main thing that makes this work expensive is that
it took years to make. It was also quite expensive mentally
but that's a different story...

> I'm not asking like "OOOHHHH WHAT DO YOU USE!!!!" but just
whether it costs
> very much at all to get your setup together...

No not really expensive, studios build over time but mine's
still very minimal. Microcontact and The housebound spirit
were made with an Apple G4 350hz(that’s slow) running
protools and max/msp. Emu esi4000 sampler from 1997 and with
16mb of memory. Nord micromodular. AKG 3000b and soundman
binaural mics. Guitars, Accordion

-------------- rest of quote

+ the session musicians valuable contributions.

> One thing ive noticed recently working in a record shop
that sells mainly
> chart an all is how even the production is on everything
expensive and how
> stuff like yourself in particular sounds so rich yet
couldn't have had much
> money put into it at all.

I think 'richness' or any textural effect comes from
choosing the right sounds to put togeather. It's also about
careful use of dynamics (the range from the most quiet to
the loudest sounds). I don't think I do anything
uber-magical just record sources as clean as possible and
try not to kill the integrity of the source by fucking it up
with plug-ins.

Mike P said once that I record at high sample/bit rates but
that's not true, everything released so far was done at 16
bit 44.1 The new stuff I'm doing is at 24 bit which gives
you more headroom and dynamic range but apart from that
nothing special.

If your curious to know some of the story behind the record
here is the HBS press release:

Planet Mu release LEAFCUTTER JOHN’s “The Housebound
Spirit” in July.

Third album from London-based acousmatic composer and East
London "face about town" John Burton. Very emotional
electro-acoustic/computer music in the vein of Parmegiani
and Jim O'Rourke mixed with heartfelt folk inspired by
Palace Brothers among others. This is very melodic,
sensitive and dynamic, not a glitch-fest.

“The Housebound Spirit” was made between 2001-2003 and
constructed almost entirely from sounds John recorded in his
various homes during that period. “Escape from the Globus
Playpen” is made exclusively from the sounds made by a
metal stair-gate used to stop toddlers from plummeting to
their deaths.

It’s a “housebound” spirit because shortly after
recording, he developed an acute case of agoraphobia after
being attacked near his home. He began suffering panic
attacks whilst out of the house and ended up nearly always
indoors. His musical world became his only world, and his

It’s a “housebound” spirit because shortly after
recording, he developed an acute case of agoraphobia after
being attacked near his home. He began suffering panic
attacks whilst out of the house and ended up nearly always
indoors. His musical world became his only world, and his
studio expanded to become his universe. Sounds were examined
and lived with as if they were friends, enemies, fields and
trees. In this place, emotions are expressed as pure sonic
dynamics.

However, it’s not all doom and gloom. It also charts
Leafcutter John’s increasing journeys back into the
“real” world. The breakdown of one relationship gives
way to the birth of a beautiful new one as the synthetic
drone of “Short Sine Work” releases the more earthly
tones of “House or a Soul”.

John has performed at many electronic music festivals
worldwide since his debut "Concourse" on Planet Mu in 2000.
He has also remixed for and released music on Klangkrieg,
Tigerbeat6, XL
Recordings, Melange, Simbolrec and Schematic. This album was
previewed by a track on the Wire 20th Anniversary issue
cover mount cd, from which he has received many commissions
of work. Follow up to the classic Microcontact cd.

the progs on his site are pretty cool, there's one on there
that's an orchestra of about 30 (i think) scissors, and you
can adjust the pitch of each one, and yeah. also check out
the prog "fools dicta". he's got some cool stuff on there.

MachineofGod: at first i thought he sounded like Req, but
then i totally changed my mind. i want to say maybe like
autechre, but not. you gotta check him out!

I've been getting into The Housebound Spirit and it's one of
the better albums of 2003. The whole Agoraphobia angle=
golden! ''House or a Soul'' is gorgeous. What an album.

Any Leafcutter fans? What's Microcontact like?

Yes, I love this album. I don't know why more people aren't
talking about it -- it's a thousand times better than just
about anything coming out recently. Top quality.
