on the album?

love the drumming on that track.

nice ramshackle effect when it gets going at last.

the drumming is amazing.. it's apparently the only song on
the whole album with live drumming. trent listened to the
song on his headphones slightly out of sync to get that
sound. it works really well. always been one of my favorite
songs. for some reason it blends in my mind with tori amos's
"rabbit.. where'd you put the keys, girl?" outro to
"cornflake girl".

offline Zeus from San Francisco (United States) on 2003-07-28 12:44 [#00797112]

it might be live...

but their is either programming over it, or there are
multiple takes pasted over each other...

offline titsworth from Washington, DC (United States) on 2003-07-28 12:49 [#00797131]

i say "live" because all the other drums on the album are
sampled and spliced together, mostly from iggy pop records.
"piggy" was recorded by trent on a drum kit (this is a
fact).

well, i believe i was 16 when it came out... i bought it
quickly but, i didn't get into it immediately.

so, yeah i guess i was a late bloomer.

actually, i believe it came out early in '94 which would've
made me 15 still. but, never the less, i bought it at the
same time i bought 36 chambers, and that album stole my
heart for a while.

is that the only song that has live drumming..?

"march of the pigs" also sounds like it has live drumming.
as does "eraser".

MOTP: iggy pop "lust for life"
eraser: i don't know..
closer: iggy pop "night clubbing" and tommy lee's live
drumming (these may not have been used in the final mix but
he did record drums for this song)
other songs: probably a mix between sampled drums, drum
machines, and sparse live drumming from trent himself

trent said in a whole bunch of interviews how the whole
album (exaggeration, but his, not mine) samples iggy pop
drums, it's not played. let me find one specific interview
where he says this..

he doesn't say piggy samples that iggy song, TRUE. but he
does say that most everything is programmed. chris did sound
design on this album, i don't know if he played any drums at
all. remember, when he played live, as good a drummer as he
is, during his time with nin he just played what trent
instructed and that's all. he did it perfectly but it wasn't
a creative venture; read a vrenna interview and he'll admit
his role was very machine-line.

one live drummer i didn't mention is stephen perkins (jane's
addiction, PFP), he played on TDS. but it really is mostly
sampled, as trent himself admits. it wasn't till the fragile
he really messed around with drums.

oops, i meant:
he doesn't say MOTP samples that iggy song, TRUE.

i think the studio (non-video) version sounds very spliced
and a lot of people think it's from "lust for life", and i'd
tend to agree with them
