i fucking hate these pigeon holing genre names. why is it
intellegent dance music? and fatboy slim is/was classed as
electronica, same as chemical brothers. anyone think of a
better pigeon hole besides braindance?

You say you hate pigeon holeing and then ask for yet another
new one?

I just call it electronic music if I am pushed for a genre
name.

i never really got those names either. but i hate people who
refer to all electronic music as dance music.

AAARRRGGGHHH!!!!

pigeoholing is one of my favourite hobbies... in reality
what has been come to be known as idm is really the
experimental fringes of all electronic genres (i've made the
comparison here before: idm is to house, techno, and dnb, as
Lappland is to norway, finland, and sweden)... i'd say a
better name for it all would be avant-techno, or
experimental electonics... but really, it's more of a
relative state of being on the musical spectrum, than it is
a genre... when glitch techno is no longer a fringe genre
(if this ever happens), it can no longer be considered what
we'd call idm... as far as genres go... idm can be
subdivided into many many proper genres... glitch-hop,
click-house, minimal house, minimal techno, drill'n'bass,
etc.

madonna went glitch last year, n'sync the year before that,
and hollywood has used glitch style production for years now

I just call it ''IDM'' because it's convenient and we all
know what we mean when that term is thrown around.

I hate it though. If I tell someone I like ''IDM'', I LOATHE
to tell them what it actually stands for.

i call it electronic music. but it can be misleading to
people. they might think i listened to a specific electronic
music genre which i might not be really into that much

i like the term IDM.

when they hear "electronic music" they think of dance music
like house/techno/d'n'b. I do enjoy some of it (expecially
d'n'b) but my main passion is erhm "home listening
electronic music" ...but then again some of it can be
enjoyed in a club. you see? it's hard to fucking explain
yourself, because IDM (don't hit me) has so much diversity
:)

"its really a tired discussion. i generally think its a bad
name, but, people take it way too seriously.

lets say you have "alternative rock"....whats so alternative
about it?nothing, as far as i can tell. what makes one
alternative? the term is really unaccurate!

yet, nobody gets upset or takes that seriously. why should i
take the term idm seriously? well, i dont. i really dont
care.

neither should anyone else. its like they only get upset
because its their music of choice, yet hey dont complain
about the rest of the 99% of genres that are unnaccurate
according to the people who listen to them.

people just need to chill. straight up."

i posted this on another thread, but i thought people
stopped caring about the name or whatever. figured i might
as well post it again.

Do you think people don't like the name IDM as it's too
literal, unlike funk, hiphop, electro, jazz, indie, folk,
house, rock etc.

funk, hip-hop, folk, and rock are as literal as can be, the
rest are somewhat literal too when you think about it

the story behind that genre name

rock is named after the rocky edge of the guitar riffs, folk
because of its everyday folk quality of who would write and
perform the songs and pass them on like a joke or story,
funk because of the funkiness of the bass among other
elements, and hip-hop because it was at the time a very hip
new thing with a jaunty rhythm (again at the time).. indie
from independent (no real musical meaning, so it definitely
gained a sound by connotation instead of denotation),
electro associated with electronics obviously..

but idm is strictly literal and a pretty dull name, no doubt

like it would stink though.
