Any fans of him here? I had to perform his clapping music
for my final piece in AS Level Performing arts. His stuff
has startedto grow on me. Especially his early stuff. It's
great to listen to through headphones

steve reich is off the hook! do a search on "reich" here and
you'll find some lengthy discussions. i also wrote an
acclaimed 19 page comparison of a piece by reich to aphex's
SAW2 and i can give you a link to that if you're interested
in reading it.

my favorites are "music for large ensemble," "eight lines,"
"tellahim," "drumming," "music for mallet instruments,
voices and organ," "electric counterpoint," and of course
"music for 18 musicians."

the early phase stuff is interesting, but my favorites (the
melodic works) evoke a feeling that is otherworldly. i have
tremendous esteem and respect for steve reich.

Didn't The Orb basically steal the whole theme for "star 6 7
8 9" from "electric counterpoint"?

Steve Reich is performing (he's also doing a seminar, where
he's discussing his sources of inspiration) here in
Trondheim this Saturday and Tuesday. I haven't heard
anything of him, but i think i'll go anyway.

on sunday i saw his 6 pianos piece performed in bern. it was
amazing. he has skill, and so did those pianists. 6 grand
pianos in a great hall.. i could swear i heard some woodwind
/ brass instruments... 6 pianos playing together made a very
special sound

Steve Reich is the divine embodies in a musician. Probably
one onf the most amazing musical experiences you can ever
have is entering a transe while listening to "drumming". I
recommend the ECM version of 18 musicans (although the sound
quality isn't that great) as it has more character than the
Nonesuch recording. To quote a friend "i want to have his
kids by anal birth".

"....Come Out. Composed in 1966, it was originally part of a
benefit .... for the retrial, with lawyers of their own
choosing, of the six boys arrested for murder during the
Harlem riots of 1964. The voice is that of Daniel Hamm, now
aquitted and then 19, describing a beating he took in
Harlem's 28th precinct station. The police were about to
take the boys out to be "cleaned up" and were only taking
those that were visibly bleeding. Since Hamm had no actual
open bleeding he proceeded to squeeze open a bruise on his
leg so that he would be taken to the hospital. "I had to
like open the bruise up and let some of the bruise blood
come out to show them."

Octet has some of the swingingest sounds this side of those
microphones that moved in similar fashion. It's like ten
PBS specials playing at once, and they're all about ducks.
PBS stands for public broadcasting service.

better than that one and yada, yada, yada...i never got one.
also, is any of his newer stuff good too?
