well, Orbus Terrarum is down at the second hand store, so I could get that one for cheaper then the others... but I have read it's probably not the best place to start... what does everyone think?

i'm not the best resource, since i consider "u.f.orb" (nearly universally hailed as a classic) their worst record. but since you asked...
orbus terrarum has a lot of variety, with a deep, booming, expensive sound, a mix of dub and intensely fractured and deep fried slow motion syncopated house, with nary a dance beat remaining. unique and classic. difficult to start with only since it is so developed and detailed (don't judge on the first listen!), in contrast to ultraworld which is much more basic and airier.
orblivion is half great, a mix of less dubby classic electronic sounds with contemporary styles but remaining signature orb without sounding like pastiche. the failed tracks are cheesy upbeat singles fodder (toxygene) or pointless synth excursions (most of the last half of the album). worth it for the 30 odd minutes of greatness.
adventures beyond the ultraworld was released in two formats: a single disc, which contains the catchy and melodic single mixes with some of the better tracks from the original two disc release. the original two disc release lacks these concise singles and instead features lengthy dub influenced versions, many of which i find less than engaging. i recommend the single disc version, if you can find it. not sure which was released in canada. purists will likely insist on the two disc version.
since someone mentioned pomme fritz, consider this one also. pomme fritz is actually a lengthy single, but was marketed as a "little album" since it's 45 minutes long. it is analogous to an experience with a psychedelic drug. it starts out warm and melodious, with a syncopated rhythm and sinewy guitar line, then breaks down into a science fiction nightmare where very little makes sense and the music disappears into a swirling mass of voices and noise. eventually, the noise dissipates into a steady rhythm, which grows into a huge mist of synthesizers and melody called "everything is beautiful" (the title is actually in german, btw) capped with a short stroll thro

through an odd carnival atmosphere. unique and an essential companion to orbus terrarum. the extended freakout in the middle turns a lot of people off. recognize, also, that pomme fritz presents two tracks with two straightforward (for the orb) mixes and three very strange and trippy remixes, plus the short carnival track at the end. not really an album at all.

this is so sweet though... it's exactly what I've been craving... I bought FSOL's Lifeforms the other day, and it's nice, but this is exactly what I wanted... big huge songs with great synth parts, and nice chilled beats... yummy stuff!!

I personally enjoy U.F. Orb - the beginning track is enough to put your mind over the edge.
Orbus Terrarum is completely otherworldly - IMO, you can't go wrong unless you purchase Cydonia.

If you're looking for 74 minutes of pure, dubbed, spaced-out, ambient bliss, then "U.F. Orb" is that place you want to be...

All this talk has caused me to put on Orbvs Terrarvm. I'm missing the good old fashioned melodic/ambient stuff.
I was listening to FSOL's Dead Cities last night and thinking I need another one of their albums.

ultraworld double disc version was my guide through many LSD adventures. Probably my gateway into electronic music. it's pretty classic however a bit dated.
