 | our assingment this week was to write a pop song in 6 hours, using csound.

6 hours straight... but we didnt do the sound design... we
used samples from the csound catalog. (presets basically).
So i had to go through and find the sounds, edit them a bit,
and render them the wav. Then I had to use a normal
sequencer to write the song (i sequnced in reason, since i
dont have a sampler for Logic yet) I then exported the
tracks and mixed it down in logic.

so yeah, 6 hours nonstop, and here are the results...

 enjoy

btw, pop song, means, something with beats and melody.
something noncsound sounding (ie ambient). So yeah, this
 isnt POP. yeah.

 6 Hour Pop Song

 teehee

Nice enough track, needs more harmonic movement, like a key
change or a bridge or summin. [talk about the pot calling
the kettle black, sheesh my stuff is monotonous]

relexing in a way and easy enough to listen to without being
 overly complex!

 | The Jam were one of the most important post-punk bands of the late 70s and early 80s. Unfortunately, Paul Weller went
on to head The Style Council and further made a comeback as
some Indie Kid type person who wrote extremely dull songs !

Seriously though. The Jam are possibly on of the most
important bands of their era. I know they're english so
that's possibly an excuse to have not heard of them but
you've probably heard their music. They were pretty
influential. Paul Weller is still about but not doing
anything anywhere near as good as the Jam days. Have an
internet search and you'll find some good info on them.

 | well, at least 2 years of formal training on an instrument is pretty much mandatory.

You have to declare an instrument of study, and you will
take private lessons, labs, and ensembles... (My principle
instrument is Bass, and thank god I finished my
requirments... performing isnt really my thing)

But, yeah, you dont really need any music theory before
coming, but if you have it, it will help getting you in (ive
known people who didnt know anything about music theory, and
couldnt even read music... but they where just phenomonal on
their instruments... so it makes up for it, and they will
learn it while they are here.)

If you want more info, www.berklee.edu has all the info you
 need.

 | My advice is to not go to a music college at all. I seriously doubt the fact that these colleges actually make
you a better musician, especially when you make electronic
 music.
I've been through those theory lessons for the last 2 years
and I can tell you, it's useless if you make electronic
 music.
I've been playing guitar for almost 11 years now (since I
was 5 or 6 years old) and I always wanted to go to a music
college. I even went to a school where I would get more
music lessons. But the closer I'm getting to actually have
the ability to go to such a college, the more I'm realising
that talent can not be teached.

 | no, talent cannot be teached
 but it can be nourished.

I dont want to get into this debate again, but basically,
saying that music school is BS, is just as ignorant, and
close minded, as saying, people who dont go to music school
 arnt musicians.

Why does everything have to be so black and white?

 | nonono, I don't think I made my point clear. What I'm trying to say is: Continue making music as much as
you can, but don't go to a college for it. You see, it's
hard to make money with music. You need to have reserves.
What if people don't like your music? What will you do then?
You won't have a certificate for another job. That's why
I've chosen to study multimedia instead of music. That means
I can try to become a succesfull musician but if that
doesn't work I can still become a graphic designer or a
 sound engineer.

a strictly classical school... isnt going to help you get
 lots of jobs...

but if you go to a more modern school, there is much more
oppertunities. Thats why I like berklee... it has the
composition side of things, and also the technological
side... personally I think as far as jobs, synthesis is
 whats gonna be my field...

 | Again, I like the rich sound produced by csound. It was quite a mellow nice track. There was one part, it was like
two wannabe violentish bursts in a row that subtracted
rather than added to the whole IMO. You probably know which
part I mean. It would be better without that part (it
happens about 4 or more times).
